Quick Look

BMW has given the X6 xDrive35i a complete redesign for 2015, though in many ways it still looks very similar to the 2014 model. Generally speaking, however, this crossover SUV offers unorthodox styling and a wealth of special features that make it a perfect fit for anyone looking to stand out on the road.

Full Review

The BMW X6 became first available in 2009, having offered buyers a combination of unique styling and all-wheel-drive capability. For 2015, BMW has given the X6 a significant refresh, and although it looks really similar to the previous-year model, there are big changes happening both outside and inside. The sheet metal is completely new, while the interior got improvements like additional rear-passenger space and a wealth of latest technologies – all at your fingertips. The X6 xDrive35i is one of the three available trims in the lineup, two of which are all-wheel-drive. Buyers looking for a sport utility vehicle that feels fresh, unique and engaging to drive will not be disappointed in the X6.

The exterior design of the X6 is one of the most striking parts of this vehicle due to its uniqueness. BMW has essentially a combination of a coupe and SUV that somehow manages to work. The styling is dramatic, but still familiar thanks to details like the signature kidney-shaped grille. The aggressive nature of this vehicle is asserted through the large twin-circle LED headlights, air inlets and chrome inserts. The new model is also slightly longer, wider and taller. There are also two additional exterior colours for the new year, such as Dark Olive and Flamenco Red Metallic. The xDrive35i model rides on 19-inch wheels and comes with functional features, which include adaptive xenon headlights, a power liftgate and sunroof for an added cool factor.

The interior of the X6 has always been a highlight, and with the updates for 2015, it’s nicer than ever. The cabin looks really well thought-out with expensive-looking upholstery and trims to be found throughout the vehicle. The electronic gauge cluster is not only sophisticated, but also functional. Large drink holders, deep door pockets and other handy features make the X6’s cabin a functional place to spend time.

The front seats are 10-way power adjustable with four-way lumbar and driver memory settings. The rear seats are also improved for 2015 thanks to the additional rear legroom. The cargo area, however, takes a hit for this model, losing over five cubic feet behind the rear bench.

The technology features in the X6 are some of the best on any BMW model to date. The jumbo 10.4-inch touchscreen is standard – as is the iDrive infotainment system. It’s attractive, offering crisp graphics and unfortunately somewhat sluggish layout. The xDrive35i also comes standard with Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, BMW Assist emergency communications, a nine-speaker sound system, navigation and more.

Powering the X6 xDrive35i is a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine that puts out 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. An all-wheel-drive system known as xDrive is standard on this vehicle along with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Overall, the 2015 BMW X6 xDrive35i is a flashy crossover, but it’s also useful in terms of functionality and space. So, if driving something capable and unique is what you’re after, then don’t overlook the X6.

Power and Performance:

For 2015, the X6 sDrive 35i and xDrive35i have a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that develops 300 hp and 300 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard for the sDrive 35i, and all-wheel drive is standard for the xDrive 35i. Both models use an eight-speed automatic transmission. BMW says either six-cylinder X6 will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in a brisk 6 seconds, while EPA-estimated fuel economy is 22 mpg combined (19 city/27 highway) for the sDrive 35i and 21 mpg combined (18 city/27 highway) for the xDrive 35i.

Interiors and Special Features:

The X6's interior has always been a strong suit, and the redesigned cabin for 2015 is even nicer than before. With a Jumbotron-sized 10.2-inch screen positioned at the top of the center dash, an all-new electronic gauge cluster and rich-looking upholstery and trim throughout, BMW hasn't cut any corners when in here. The slick and attractive iDrive interface works well for controlling and adjusting all of the X6's systems, though in our experience it typically takes a few more clicks and twists of the control knob to get what you want; some rival systems are easier to use.
