Quick Look

The BMW 7-Series is the long-standing flagship sedan in the BMW lineup. Now five years into the current generation, the 7-Series remains one of the most refined and technologically advanced vehicles in the segment, proving its status as BMW’s top car.

Full Review

The BMW 7-Series has been a staple of the BMW lineup for almost four decades, and as the brand’s flagship sedan, it has really earned its keep. This car is well into the current generation, five years to be exact, yet it still manages to be a class leader in technology and overall refinement. This beast, despite being the biggest car in the BMW lineup, manages to drive with precision and offer impeccable power, something that can’t be said for much of the competition. The 2015 740Ld xDrive is a very recent and special component of this famous lineup since it offers better fuel economy than the ActiveHybrid 7 model thanks to its diesel engine, but not at the expense of power. The “xDrive” part of the name stands for BMW’s infamous all-wheel-drive system, while the “L” represents its lengthened wheelbase. All of the perks of this car highlight the fact that BMW is contently making constant changes and tweaks in order to stay relevant and ahead of the competition.

The exterior design of the 740Ld is defined by its sleek lines and sporty yet elegant shape. The 7-Series underwent a mid-generation redesign two years ago that updated the front fascia among other details, and the new 740Ld embraces those changes. All of the proportions of this vehicle hit the mark, contributing to its handsome and purposeful look. There is a long, horizontal lower intake that runs across the nose and the signature kidney-style grille adds the familiarity. The long wheelbase, signified by the “L,” adds almost 14 extra centimetres of length to the car, improving practicality. The attention to detail is impeccable and ever-present in everything, including the long chrome strip across the bumper. The 740 Ld really does achieve a beautiful stance and silhouette. Some of the many standard features on this vehicle include 18-inch wheels, adaptive xenon headlights, automatic and self-leveling LED foglamps, a sunroof and rear parking sensors.

The interior of the 740Ld is just as refined and beautiful as the exterior is, embracing the attention to detail and impeccable build quality theme throughout. The refinement and elegance can be seen in the vehicle’s soft-touch materials and straightforward cockpit. There is little clutter to speak of and all of the controls are laid out in a manageable manner.

The interior of this vehicle is both spacious and comfortable, part of which can be attested to the extended wheelbase. Front-seat occupants are treated to all of the luxury money can buy, especially if you opt for the multicontour 20-way-power-adjustable seats. The rear seats also offer a lot of legroom and the added centimetres can even accommodate crossed legs. The cargo space is a bit disappointing for the class at only 14 cubic feet of space. Some notable standard features in the 740Ld include four-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather upholstery and heated power front seats.

The technology features in the 740Ld are also quite sophisticated as each model is equipped with BMW’s own iDrive infotainment system. This system houses all of the entertainment and information technologies, including audio, Bluetooth, navigation and more. The system is displayed on a 10.2-inch widescreen that offers access to many of the car’s systems. iDrive has been commended for the straightforward menu structure, crisp graphics and quick processing times. While there is only a short learning curve, we do recommend getting yourself familiar with the system before embarking on too long of a journey.

Powering the 740Ld xDrive is a 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel six-cylinder engine that produces 255 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. This vehicle is paired with BMW’s all-wheel-drive system, xDrive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The diesel engine is one of the most efficient powertrains in the 7-Series, being rated at 9.05 litres per 100 kilometres combined.

Overall, the 2015 BMW 740Ld xDrive offers a unique blend of power and efficiency that definitely fills a void in the 7-Series lineup.

Interiors and Special Features:

The design of the cockpit is straightforward -- not chaotic and cluttered, as luxury cars can be -- with streamlined dash shapes and densely grained wood trim and ceramic-finished knobs. In the center of the dash is a new version of iDrive, which this year adds a touch-pad controller.

Safety features:

Due to its low sales volume, the BMW 7-Series hasn't recently been crash-tested by the agencies that evaluate vehicle safety. However, the build quality and available technologies make this BMW a standout, offering some of the best occupant safety in the world.
