Quick Look

The 2015 BMW 428i is the coupe version of the 328i sedan as well as the lowest-tier model in the 4-Series lineup. The biggest highlight of the 428i is the power of its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, which can deliver 240 horsepower, and the nimbleness provided by its relatively compact size. Of course, that also means that the coupe is quite small, with the size being one of its glaring flaws.

Full Review

The 2015 BMW 428i is essentially the coupe version of the 328i sedan. It is also the lowest-tier model in the 4-Series lineup of BMW vehicles. The 3-Series models used to include coupes as well, but it looks as if sometime down the road, the manufacturer has decided that having both types of vehicles in the same lineup was a bad idea. As a result, the 4-Series became the dedicated coupe-and-convertible “section” in the BMW repertoire.

The 2015 428i doesn’t really stray far from the 3-Series coupe’s well-honed exterior design, but that's not a bad thing at all – because that design is great. The coupe and convertible are admittedly larger and lower, featuring flowing headlights that connect with BMW’s signature twin-kidney grille, while being complemented by two boomerang vents behind the front wheel wells. This variant has only to doors as well as a swooping roofline, which means that the space inside is fairly limited.

On the inside, the 428i can actually fit in four passengers, but only those at the front will be the ones to experience any sort of comfort, sadly. The back seats are adequate, but the sloping roofline will significantly limit your headroom, while the front seats will infringe on your legroom. In other words, the rear seats are best reserved for luggage – or people in emergency situations. The cargo area isn’t much better in this particular model, so the back seats could be useful in this regard. BMW has always been about shaping its cabins to accommodate the driver first, which is true here as well. All the controls are easy to reach, while the iDrive control system is simpler to use than ever before – though it is still one of the worst on the luxury market. That being said, the mirrors at the front are surprisingly small, so if you need to use them for something like applying makeup, then you better bring your own mirror. If you want to accommodate the back passenger a little more and have 45 cubic feet of cargo space, then you are better off going for the Gran Coupe variant.

Under the hood, the new BMW 428i has a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that can produce 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain allows the vehicle to accelerate up to 97 km/h in 5.7 seconds, regardless of whether you go for the manual or automatic transmission – or if you have those grippy summer tires. The car is also very agile thanks to its small size, so you won’t have any problems zipping around the city like a madman (if you wish to). The fuel economy is not bad in this coupe, carrying the combined rating of 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres (if you go for the front-wheel-drive version).

Overall, the 2015 BMW 428i is as good a vehicle as expected, as long as you know its limitations. Coupes are small, which means that its primary purpose is to satisfy you as a driver above all else, which it does. That being, said the lack of back passenger room and cargo space may turn off some, so be aware of that!

Power and Performance:

The 2015 428i uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder to generate 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. That puts it within reach of 60 mph in 5.7 seconds with either the manual or automatic transmission, with grippy summer tires. You also get a 155-mph, electronically limited top speed.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 4-passenger cabin of the 4 Series coupe and convertible is comfortable for those in front, but just adequate for rear passengers. BMW has long shaped its cabins around the driver, and that focus remains here. Controls are within easy reach, and the iDrive control system is getting simpler. If your front-seat passenger plans to apply makeup, she should bring her own mirror – those in BMWs are surprisingly small. Though the Gran Coupe's exterior footprint is the same as 2-door models, this 4-door has better rear-passenger access and over 45 cubic feet of cargo space with rear seats folded.

Safety features:

The standard safety equipment you get on the 2015 BMW 4-Series includes a full suite of airbags, stability control, adaptive brake lights, and anti-lock brakes. The 4-Series also includes an Automatic Collision Notification system that relays important information to emergency responders. Bluetooth is standard, too, but a rearview camera is an option on the more basic models—yes even though we're speaking of a model that costs more than $40k and has less than ideal outward visibility.
