Quick Look

The BMW X5 is a full-size luxury SUV that is best suited for chauffeuring large families in a luxurious way since it’s far less off-roady than it seems. Nonetheless, the BMW X5 is a refined, capable and comfortable vehicle that will fulfill all of your people-hauling needs.

Full Review

The BMW X5 has a lot to offer its owners – from a lean and aggressive look to its powerful engine, to its luxurious and spacious cabin. This full-size luxury SUV can be configured to meet the needs of almost every potential buyer out there, though it’s a much better fit for a regular road than a difficult terrain. The X5 has been a staple of the BMW lineup since 1999 and received its most recent overhaul for the 2014 model year that launched the third generation.

The 2015 BMW xDrive35d comes with a diesel-powered engine and all-wheel-drive system known as the xDrive. The diesel engine also gets some pretty impressive numbers in the fuel economy department, which means that this vehicle is not only luxurious, but also affordable.

The BMW X5 offers the same design that was brand-new just last year, being a softer and more luxurious version of the previous generation. The X5, from a distance, resembles its younger X3 sibling thanks to its even-looking proportions. Though the new X5 is has the same dimensions as its predecessor, this design looks much leaner and sleeker. The X5 gets the signature kidney-style front grille, which flows nicely into the headlight casings that house the all-LED units. The tapered roofline and slightly lowered beltline combination gives the X5 more of a sport-wagon look than before. Standard exterior features on the xDrive35d include 18-inch wheels, adaptive xenon headlights, foglights, a panoramic sunroof and power liftgate to name a few. Adding different optional packages, such as the Luxury, xLine and M Sport, will customize and personalize the X5 to your liking.

The interior of the BMW X5 is elegant and refined – with luxurious details to be found throughout. The build quality is top-notch and the surfaces found around the cabin are of the highest grade. The classic BMW gauges are familiar, large, central and easy to use. For the first time with the X5, there are two interior themes that can be ordered as an upgrade to the standard poplar wood trim and black leatherette upholstery. The standard X5 has room for five across two rows, while a third row can be added to increase the passenger count by two. However, third-row seating is very tight. With just the first two rows, seating is very spacious and comfortable, but might be a little tight in legroom for the rear passenger. The standard front seats are 10-way power adjustable, offering driver memory settings and heat functions. The cargo space in the X5 measures 66 cubic feet with both rows folded, which is pretty subpar compared to the rest of the segment.

Like most other BMWs, the X5 uses an infotainment system known as iDrive, which curates all of the information and entertainment features into one system. While the system is easy to navigate, some rival systems tend to get to screens or functions with fewer clicks of a button. Standard features include BMW Assist, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity as well as smartphone app integration. All of these displayed on a free-standing 10.2-inch central display screen. The iDrive controller also has a touchpad-style surface on its controller for text entry. Buyers get the choice of two premium audio systems – Harman Kardon or Bang & Olufsen. There is a rear-seat DVD entertainment system as well, with two screens that are roughly the size of an iPad mini.

The engine is a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder diesel that produces 255 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s all-wheel-drive system called the xDrive.

Overall, the 2015 BMW X3 xDrive35d is a great option for those looking for not only a refined and luxurious vehicle, but also one that will offer good fuel economy, despite its large size. The X3 should definitely be high up on your list of full-size luxury crossovers to check out.

Power and Performance:

We've spent all our time in the 2015 X5 thus far in the diesel and V-8 models. The xDrive35d is powered by a twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder diesel engine, producing 255 hp and 413 lb-ft. BMW promises 0-60 mph times of 6.7 seconds, and it's believable. We spent a half-day driving the X5 from Vancouver to its extra-urban Olympic ski village, and got into an easy rhythm with the turbodiesel, accelerating quickly into holes in city traffic and settling into a relatively quiet cruise. It develops its peak torque before 3,000 rpm, giving it the swift responses of the gas six, for the most part--with a moderate amount of the usual diesel drivetrain noises.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside, the design will be instantly familiar to anyone who's been in other late-model BMWs. Only here the horizontal-shelf layout, with a cockpit-style instrument zone, is wrapped over (and just behind) by a separate layer that merges in with the rest of the dash at the door trim. For the first time, two interior themes can be ordered as an upgrade to the standard poplar wood trim and black leatherette upholstery: Ivory White Nappa leather matches up with oak or other wood trims, while the Mocha look gets Nappa leather in that color and black Nappa leather on the dash, with contrasting wood trim. Dakota leather upholstery is standard on the xDrive50i and available on the other models.

Safety features:

BMW's Parking Assistant takes the wheel when it's ordered; it can steer the vehicle into parallel spots or perpendicular ones, at the touch of a button. The same underlying technology couples with adaptive cruise control to bring you Traffic Jam Assistant, which maintains following distance all on its own in heavy traffic, and keeps the vehicle at the center of its lane by providing steering input.
