Negotiate Smarter with the Best Car Buying Tools

We know the company’s storied history, but the question is what about it’s future? Well, we can confidently state that if it looks as good as the 2014 Lincoln MKZ, things are going to be more than ok at Ford. Although the MKZ was launched in 2013, it faced a slow rollout which inhibited the growth of the car. The 2014 model will be the first one to really gain traction in the Canadian car marketplace.

It all starts with a sensuously penned body, the first design created by a dedicated team from the new Lincoln design studio. No matter at which angle you catch it, the 2014 Lincoln MKZ is worth a stare.  The car is uptown sophisticated, conservatively athletic, a tad retro, and proudly American all at once. Opt in for the Ruby Red paint and 19” polished aluminum wheels with painted pockets and you’ve got yourself a fantastic looking ride.

Although the 2014 MKZ borrows a lot of its style from the Ford Fusion, it’s nice to see that it still has its own individualized style. Unlike the Fusion however, the MKZ can still be order with the good old-fashioned V6 power. The 2014 Lincoln MKZ comes standard with the company’s successful 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It still provides the luxury car buyer with a heaping dose of refined power as well as improved fuel economy. The engine pumps out 240-horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque which is much more than enough to power this luxury sedan.

Fuel efficiency ratings for the 2014 MKZ clock in at 10.7 L/100km city driving and 7.13 L/100km on the highway for the front-wheel-drive model. The all-wheel-drive MKZ gets 10.7 L/100km in the city and 7.59 L/100km on the highway. The difference between the two is close to nothing, so if you’re looking for a fun drive, the all-wheel-drive MKZ is definitely a great option. The MKZ is also available in a hybrid for those interested in a real fuel-efficient machine.

The ride inside the 2014 Lincoln MKZ is lively and you can feel that the car loves to take advantage of the 270 pound-feet of torque that it has at its disposal. All around, every aspect of the drive reflects a luxury sedan that has been well built. The Lincoln drive control orchestrates the continuously controlled damping shocks, electric assist steering, engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, and other variables to automatically deliver the optimum combination for tailored drivability.  Active noise control also works to keep the cabin quiet and reduce any engine noise when pressing on the gas.

The only drawback we could find inside the 2014 Lincoln MKZ was the push-button shift-gear selector. It looks neat but we’re not sure if it was the greatest idea. The “S” driving mode engages the holistic sport mode in the vehicle. No matter which type of riving situation awaits you, the 2014 MKZ does an excellent job at all of them.

In summary, the 2014 Lincoln MKZ is a great luxury sedan that is definitely ready to put some large footprints on the luxury sedan market. The amazing handling and handsome looks are only a few reasons why we highly recommend it.

Power and Performance:

There's never been a Lincoln as athletic as the 2014 MKZ. It seems almost completely out of place when you compare it to the last generation model, and completely unrelated to the Town Car that's since been retired. We're not sure yet whether it's a blessing or a curse, but we do know that it's going to take a minute to recalibrate our expectations of the brand.

The MKZ shares the Fusion's electric power steering, but the strut and multi-link suspension gets adaptive shocks with three driver-selectable settings in the MKZ. In nearly 200 miles of driving over interstates, secondary and surface streets, we chose the Sport mode over normal and comfort most often, to our surprise. In the Fusion, the very taut ride is entertaining for enthusiasts, but in a family sedan, it's a borderline choice. In the MKZ, the Sport mode produces nearly the same ride firmness and induces some weight in the steering that feels the most natural of any of its settings, though there's still very little feedback. In the other modes, the MKZ struggles for that level of composure, trading its absorbent ride for something less nuanced, and mostly just "soft." We'll concede user-selectable steering is an easy gimmick to put on the latest electric-steer cars, mostly to no harm. Going to an adaptive suspension that doesn't notably improve handling, instead of choosing more talented shocks and tires, sounds like overkill.

Three powertrains are offered in the new MKZ, and two of them are essentially identical to their counterparts in our Best Car To Buy 2013, the Ford Fusion. The base MKZ gets a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine, coupled to a six-speed automatic with paddle shift controls, with either front- or all-wheel drive.

A revamped version of the MKZ's 3.7-liter V-6 returns, with 300 horsepower and a choice of front- or all-wheel drive, and the same carryover six-speed automatic transmission controlled by dash-mounted pushbuttons, one of a host of new touches Lincoln's using to distinguish the MKZ from the related Ford Fusion.

Finally, there's the MKZ Hybrid, with the new generation of Ford's hybrid drivetrain. The new 2.0-liter four-cylinder hybrid drivetrain has lithium-ion batteries and a continuously variable transmission, better packaging and lower weight, and according to the EPA, earns 5.23 L/100km across the board.

Interiors and Special Features:

If the 2014 Lincoln MKZ has an Achilles' heel, it's the interior styling. The ergonomics are sound, but the materials, textures and drab design put its visual appeal at the bottom of the category. The touch-capacitive buttons are rather difficult to use due to poor response, and the lack of conventional audio and climate controls turns simple inputs into a maddening excursion through a vast sea of on-screen menus. The MKZ's sizable exterior dimensions do not translate to roomy interior quarters, either, as rear-seat legroom and headroom are notably lacking.

Positioned as a value-oriented luxury brand, Lincoln has become synonymous with offering vehicles loaded with a treasure trove of standard features, and the 2014 MKZ is no exception. High-end items include heated front seats, leather upholstery, an adaptive suspension that adjusts to changing road and driving conditions, full LED taillights, an 11-speaker audio system, and the MyLincoln Touch multimedia hub with an 8-inch display and conversational voice-recognition software. With a strong emphasis on passenger safety, the MKZ comes equipped with eight airbags, a comprehensive suite of stability-control systems, and Lincoln's SOS Post-Crash Alert System that activates the horn and hazard lights in the event of an airbag deployment.

Most feature content is bundled into packages, though options such as 19-inch wheels, a panoramic roof and power rear sunshade are available a la carte. Offered on both the standard and hybrid version, the Preferred equipment package includes premium creature comforts like heated rear seats, a THX II-certified 14-speaker sound system and a power open/close trunklid. For those who long for the latest electronic gadgetry, there is a Technology package comprising Active Park Assist, adaptive cruise control and a lane-keeping aid that adds steering torque to guide you back into the driving lane. Unlike its closest competitor, the Lexus ES, a moonroof is not included as standard fare.

Safety features:

Standard safety features include antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front side-impact airbags, front knee airbags and side curtain airbags. The 2014 Lincoln MKZ also features the programmable MyKey system, allowing parents to set limits for vehicle speed and stereo volume for their young drivers. Sync also offers emergency crash notification that automatically dials 911 in the event of an airbag deployment.

Optional equipment includes a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, lane-departure warning and lane keeping assist (which automatically helps the driver keep the car in its lane) systems, a forward collision warning system with brake support, and airbag-embedded rear seatbelts.

In Edmunds brake testing, an MKZ with standard all-season tires stopped from 60 mph in 121 feet, an average distance for this segment.

In government crash testing, the MKZ earned the maximum five-star rating for overall crash safety, five stars for total frontal-impact protection and four stars for total side-impact protection. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tests, the MKZ earned a top score of "Good" in moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof strength tests. The IIHS also gave the MKZ a second-best score of "Acceptable" for its new small-overlap frontal offset test.
