Quick Look

The 2014 Lincoln MKS continues on the market this year with more refinements in terms of standard options and engine capability. The Canadian-built version remains the more affordable option for those looking for a bit of luxury. However, avoid German import prices.

Full Review

The Lincoln MKS continues on the market for 2014 with some minor upgrades, including a more powerful base engine and some upgraded standard feature options. The MKS went under a complete overhaul previous to last year’s release, which is holding up well this year. The car remains very similar to the Ford Taurus, but has an upgraded engine in an effort to appeal to the younger demographic. While this car is still no sport sedan, it is nevertheless a powerful and well-equipped option for those looking to enter the luxury car market.

The Lincoln MKS has very unique exterior design that sets it apart from its German counterparts. The split-winged grille with the trademark Lincoln emblem in the middle occupies the entirety of the front end. The relatively long and contoured hood sends lines toward the rear end that add to the sleek look of this sedan. The MKS comes in three different trim levels: FWD, AWD and EcoBoost, which all add different touches to the exterior look. Notable standard features in the four-door sedan are standard LED taillights and HID headlights as well as the optional dual-panel sunroof. The Lincoln MKS has an understated design, but the details make this vehicle an elegant option.

Moving inside the large cabin of the MKS, passengers will get the feel of spacious luxury. The MKS has a notably large interior area, which will be appreciated by front and rear passengers alike. Standard details also make the MKS a stand out in terms of luxury. The interior comes with standard full leather upholstery and with high-tech features. Lincoln has successfully improved its build quality in an effort to compete with German rivals. The heated, cooling and ventilated seats are very comfortable and supportive, which is important for the new demographic of this car. The rear cabin of this five-passenger vehicle has ample headroom and legroom, so that the passengers don’t feel limited. The MKS has a refined interior style and high-quality materials that make driving in this sedan a pleasure for any trip length.

Coming in at a great price point as far as luxury sedans go, the MKS has a lot of great standard features to offer. The luxurious and spacious interior won’t be looked past by potential buyers. Also, the technology in the Lincoln MKS is quite extensive. The MyLincoln Touch system is not free of a learning curve or glitches, but it does offer a very decent infotainment system and a touchscreen interface. A standard rearview camera is also a nice safety and convenience feature.  The drivability of this car is a great feature as well. Not only will you be sitting in a comfortable cabin, but the adaptive suspension allows for a quiet drive that feels smooth and precise.

Under the hood of the Lincoln MKS is an upgraded powertrain. The FWD (front-wheel drive) and the AWD (all-wheel drive) models come standard with a 3.7-liter V6 engine that’s combined with a six-speed automatic transmission. This engine produces 305 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. The all-wheel-drive EcoBoost trim is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. Both of these engines are sufficient for pushing around this big and heavy vehicle, but the EcoBoost engine allows for an effortless acceleration reminiscent of a V8.

Overall, the 2014 Lincoln MKS is a refined and powerful vehicle with good handling. It has a large cabin and plenty of cargo space, and it definitely won’t disappoint in terms of luxury features or technology. The MKS is opening itself up to more driver than ever, which makes it a very appealing luxury sedan for just about anyone.

Power and Performance:

The FWD (front-wheel-drive) and AWD (all-wheel-drive) models use the same powertrain: a 3.7-liter V6 matched to a six-speed automatic transmission. This engine generates 305 hp and 280 pound-feet of torque. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 19 mpg city/28 highway mpg and 22 mpg combined. With AWD, those numbers drop to 18/26/21.

The all-wheel-drive EcoBoost model is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 that makes 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. In Edmunds testing, an MKS EcoBoost sprinted to 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds. Fuel economy is estimated at 17 mpg city/25 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2014 MKS features an attractive cabin with sweeping lines and a subtle ambient lighting system that adds to the luxury vibe. Materials quality and fit and finish are generally very good, although several items such as the turn signals are shared with lesser Fords. It's a small detail, but one that makes cars from Cadillac and Mercedes-Benz feel more special.

The standard MyLincoln Touch interface consists of three display screens and the ability to input commands for various audio, phone and navigation functions via voice, touch controls or buttons on the steering wheel. It's a smart idea in theory, and it provides some nice customization possibilities. Unfortunately, there's a learning curve involved and the system is slow to react to touch inputs and prone to glitches that cause it to freeze up and reboot unexpectedly. Furthermore, the touch-sensitive sliders that replace the traditional volume and fan speed knobs may look futuristic, but they're fussy to use.

Safety features:

The 2014 Lincoln MKS comes standard with stability and traction control, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags, antilock brakes, a rearview camera and rear parking sensors. Also standard is a MyKey feature that allows owners to set certain driving parameters for teen drivers. Sync also offers an emergency crash notification service that automatically dials 911 in the event of an airbag deployment.

Adaptive cruise control with collision warning and brake support (it primes the brake system to reduce braking distances for an ensuing panic stop) is available as an option, as are blind-spot/cross-traffic warning systems and lane-keeping assist.
