The 2014 Lincoln Navigator returns to market unchanged, despite needing an overhaul. While this vehicle has desirable attributes, it does not hold up well within its class.

Full Review

The 2014 Lincoln Navigator returns to market unchanged this year. The full-sized SUV has many desirable attributes that are unique in its class. It can be equipped to hold eight passengers comfortably. It has ample cargo space with the third row in use and excessively large cargo area when the third row is folded flat. This SUV also has the ability to tow a 9,000-pound trailer. The Navigator even manages to do all of this, while still looking good. Unfortunately for the Navigator, unless you are consistently driving more than six passengers, carrying camping gear or towing a trailer, there are better cars out there.

The Lincoln Navigator is a full-size four-door luxury SUV. This vehicle is strikingly large and is styled to accentuate its big and bold proportions. The flashy exterior is highlighted by the huge chrome front grille and other chrome accents. The large xenon headlights also add to the vehicle’s bold styling cues. The SUV comes in two models the standard Navigator and the Navigator L, which has an extended wheelbase. Standard exterior equipment include 18-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, foglights, front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, rear privacy glass, a power liftgate and power-folding running boards. Upgrade options include a sunroof, 20-inch chromed wheels, road-leveling rear suspension and a heavy-duty tow package. All these upgradable options will only solidify the Navigator’s presence on the road.

Moving into the cabin, you will be greeted by a vast amount of space. The navigator is overwhelmingly big. Each row, including the third in the back, has ample space to remain comfortable on long road trips — although climbing back there should be left to the young and nimble. The Navigator comes standard with seven-passenger seating, and room for eight can be added with a three-person 40/20/40-split second-row bench. The cabin is quite a luxurious environment with upscale amenities. Unfortunately, the design is a little dull and some of the materials look cheap. Standard in the Navigator comes dual-zone automatic climate control with rear auxiliary controls, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated eight-way power front seats, driver seat memory settings, heated second-row captain’s chairs and a power-folding 60/40-split third-row bench.

The technology features in the Navigator include an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 110-volt household-style power outlet, the Sync voice command system, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a rearview camera, a 6.5-inch touchscreen display, a navigation system, a touchscreen electronics interface as well as a 14-speaker surround-sound audio system with HD radio, satellite radio, a USB/iPod interface and an auxiliary audio input jack.  Upgradable options include higher-quality leather, a second-row 40/20/40-split bench and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with twin 7-inch headrest-mounted screens.  Unfortunately, compared to the competition, the Navigator’s cabin is not up to standard due to a lack of outward visibility and more up-to-date infotainment options.

The primary selling feature of this vehicle is the sheer size and power. The passenger capacity, cargo capacity and towing capacity are unmatched amongst the competition. Unfortunately for the Navigator, the combination of these three qualities is rarely required. A nice detail of the Navigator is the power-folding third-row bench, which tucks nicely beneath the floor to add more cargo space. This feature stands up against some of the competition, which requires you to haul out and store the heavy seats.  The Ford Sync system has nice features that allow you to make calls and play music with voice command; however, the screen is relatively small and isn’t as user-friendly as in the competition.

Standard safety features of the Navigator include antilock disc brakes, stability control (with a rollover sensor), traction control, trailer sway control, front-seat side airbags, three-row side curtain airbags and a post-crash alert system. The MyKey system allows parents to specify speed limits and stereo volume limits for teen drivers.

The 2014 Lincoln Navigator is powered by a 5.4-liter V8 engine that produces 310 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard on both models. An optional upgrade is a light-duty four-wheel-drive system with an electronically controlled single-speed transfer case. The two-wheel-drive model gets 14.7 liters per 100 kilometers combined and the all-wheel model gets 15.6 liters per 100 kilometers combined.

Overall, the 2014 Lincoln Navigator has a very unique blend of attributes that are rarely all desired, and it is impossible to ignore the desperate need for a redesign. When it comes to full-size luxury SUVs, there is an array of vehicles that will better pinpoint your specific needs.

Power and Performance:

Power for the 2014 Lincoln Navigator comes from a 5.4-liter V8 engine that puts out 310 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard. A light-duty four-wheel-drive system with an electronically controlled single-speed transfer case is available as an option.

The last Navigator L tested by Edmunds accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 8.2 seconds: not slow in general terms but well off the pace for this segment. Properly equipped, a rear-wheel-drive Navigator is capable of towing up to 9,000 pounds. This is a good number for this class, but more powerful competitors feel stronger and more capable when towing on hilly terrain, in spite of their numerically lower towing capacities.

Official EPA estimated fuel economy is 16 mpg in combined driving (14 city/20 highway) for the two-wheel-drive model. The four-wheel-drive Navigator is rated at 15 mpg combined (13/18).

Interiors and Special Features:

Step inside the 2014 Lincoln Navigator and you'll find an upscale environment filled with a long list of luxury amenities, from heated and ventilated front seats to a 14-speaker surround-sound audio system. While the overall effect is pleasant enough, the design looks a bit stodgy and the quality of some of the materials doesn't measure up to the furnishings in many competitors.

Perhaps this interior's greatest strength is its sheer size. Passengers in the standard first- and second-row captain's chairs enjoy comfortable accommodations with plenty of room to stretch out. Even the third row feels relatively spacious, though the climb to get back there is best left to the young and limber.

When it comes to hauling cargo, both Navigator models excel. With all the rear seats folded, the shorter-wheelbase version offers a healthy 104 cubic feet of cargo room, while the extended Navigator L comes in at an expansive 128 cubic feet. More importantly, the standard power-folding third-row seat stows neatly beneath the floor with the touch of a button, a huge advantage over the Cadillac Escalade, which requires you to remove and store its heavy third-row seats.

Gauges and controls are straightforward and intuitive. Ford's Sync system allows you to make calls and play the music stored on your iPod or smartphone with simple voice commands without having to take your eyes off the road. The AppLink feature lets you use selected smartphone audio applications in much the same manner. One notable negative is the small touchscreen display, which isn't as easy to use as the interfaces in competitors or the rest of the Lincoln lineup.

Safety features:

The 2014 Lincoln Navigator comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability control (with a rollover sensor), traction control, trailer sway control, front-seat side airbags, three-row side curtain airbags and a post-crash alert system. The standard programmable MyKey system allows parents to specify speed limits and stereo volume limits for their teenage drivers.

In government crash testing, the Navigator received four out of five stars for overall crash protection, with four stars for frontal impact protection and five stars for side impact protection.
