The 2014 Honda Ridgeline offers amazing handling in off-road conditions and is able to tackle even the toughest terrain. The exterior of the truck really grabs your attention and it commands power on the road. This pickup was Honda’s attempt at competing against trucks like the Ford F-150 and GMC Sierra, offering great power with a fair price tag. There are definitely some aspects of this car that we like, and dislike. So keep reading to find out more.

Right off the bat, we’ll get into our dislikes about this pickup truck because really, there’s very little compared to what we really like about it. The overall layout of the interior is antiquated and lack that intuitiveness that user’s generally expect out of vehicles nowadays. This interior is almost the exact opposite. The display mounted on the center console looks like a dinky, old etch-a-sketch and really isn’t driver-oriented. There’s no hood or cover to reduce glare on the screen and really reduces its functionality.

On the functionality note, the lights for the car are not on the usual shifter on the left side of the steering wheel. Instead, Honda has made this really strange dial which you twist in a circle and it’s really counter-intuitive. Even the wipers are somewhere you wouldn’t expect them to be so, again, it’s very counter-intuitive.

On a more positive note, the 2014 Honda Ridgeline has a lot of space for passengers and even a lot of storage space. The backseat can easily fit three adults and there’s so many nifty cubbies and spaces to store all your knick-knacks which is great.

The handling in the 2014 Honda Ridgeline is phenomenal, whether you’re driving around the city, in the country, off-road, you name it. The Ridgeline can take it. The pickup comes with a 3.5-litre six-cylinder engine which offers 250-horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. It’s not the most powerful engine, but it definitely gets the job done. You also get 8.2-inches of ground clearance which makes sense for a car that’s going to be taken on all kinds of terrain.

Despite claiming to be a pickup truck, the 2014 Honda Ridgeline sometimes feels like more of a commuter truck for an urban landscaper who just needs to get his supplies to the site rather than hauling a whole truckload of things with him. It gets decent gas mileage with fuel ratings of 15.68 L/100km in the city and 11.2 L/100km on the highway which is quite impressive for a truck.

All in all, Honda definitely has some things to improve upon if it truly wants to be a rival with the F-150 or Sierra. It has great looks, but the power gets a bit lost in translation. However, for the price, the 2014 Honda Ridgeline is a great offer and gives you the durability and gas mileage that you would expect out of a Honda.

Power and Performance:

When considering performance, the 2014 Honda Ridgeline is a rolling conundrum. It's perhaps the most enjoyable truck you can find to drive, but its towing and hauling capacities are at the bottom of the list. So ask yourself: What am I really buying this pickup truck to do?

The Ridgeline offers just a single drivetrain, a 250-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard, which was wise on Honda's part, since the base running gear--similar to that of the Pilot crossover utility vehicle--starts with a front-wheel-drive system. That might be a bridge too far even for more adventurous pickup drivers. There's also a low range for extra-rugged terrain, and a rear differential lock will engage at speeds of up to 18 mph, which means all-weather capability is fine.

The engine is smooth and refined, like most of Honda's V-6 powerplants, and the transmission shifts smoothly and offers a mode just for towing. It provides competitive acceleration and is brisk and energetic from a stop, making it more responsive than many of the low-end V-6 models of traditional trucks.

But the Ridgeline isn't as high-geared as some of the latest pickups, nor does it have their six-speed or eight-speed automatics, so its fuel economy suffers. And while it's fine on the pavement, it has less torque at low engine speeds, so off-roading isn't really its forte.

Interiors and Special Features:

The designers who crafted the 2014 Ridgeline's interior did just fine on function and layout of controls but could have, in our opinion, made it a little more warm and welcoming. However, the functional aspects are terrific, with storage spots throughout and a clever rear-seat bottom that can be lifted up to increase the available cargo space. And, if you order a Ridgeline with leather, the warm and welcoming factor improves significantly.

Honda's Variable Torque Management 4WD (VTM-4) works like a charm and, while the Ridgeline is not the best choice for hard-core off-roading, the VTM-4 is a gem of easy operation and useful capabilities when faced with slippery surfaces, such as snow, ice, mud or whatever else messes up the pavement. Additional standard equipment includes an integrated trailer hitch, all the usual power accessories, a power-sliding rear window and a host of convenience features.

As is typical of Honda, the options are mostly wrapped into trim levels of RT, Sport, RTS and RTL. The main additions of the Sport are 18-inch alloy wheels and some trim and convenience features. The RTS adds an upgraded 160-watt audio system, dual-zone automatic climate control and an 8-way power driver's seat. The RTL adds leather seating, different alloy wheels, a power moonroof, SiriusXM satellite radio and HomeLink. Navigation is available on the RTL. The Special Edition is new for 2014, and there are numerous dealer-installed accessories.

Safety features:

Every Ridgeline comes standard with antilock brakes, stability control, front seat side airbags, side curtain airbags (with rollover sensor) and front-seat active head restraints. A rearview camera is standard across the board.

In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests, the Ridgeline received the organization's highest "Good" rating in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof strength crash tests. Its seats/head restraints also earned a "Good" rating for whiplash protection in rear impacts.

In Edmunds testing, the Ridgeline required 133 feet to stop from 60 mph, a little long for a midsize pickup.
