The 2014 Honda Civic Sedan uses the 2013 model as a template and improves on it in almost every way. It offers better exterior design and adds plenty of new features to put this compact-sedan back on top of its game.

Though the 2014 Honda Civic Sedan is still fairly conservative in terms of overall design, it offers a better exterior look, stiffened body and more features to make it an even better experience than before. This model essentially puts the Honda Civic back on track after the near-disastrous redesign in 2012 that nearly crippled its reputation.

It’s clear that Honda has cut corners for the 2012 model, cheapening its interior, removing any form of cohesiveness and even lowering the appeal of its powertrain and front-drive handling. In the meantime, the competition quickly gained the upper hand, providing more design sophistication and features. Fortunately, the Honda Civic has managed to avert a disaster with the 2013 model, which came with new faces, new interior trims and superior suspensions. The 2014 Civic is the same car we saw last year, with even more refinements.

First of all, the new model continues relying on the Accord-like exterior design, with the front end being an almost carbon copy of the Accord’s face, featuring the same lower bumper, black mesh grille and many other qualities. The pricier models also include integrated fog lamps and new clear-lens cornering lamps. At the back, it has an Accord-like rear bumper and chrome-finishing bar.

Then there’s the cabin, which has received a much needed upgrade from the 2012 model as well, thanks to the use of high-strength steel, upgraded side pillars and a thicker windshield. The dash, floor, doors and back tray now have improved soundproofing, which greatly reduces road noise, making the 2014 Civic even more comfortable than the 2013 model.

Unfortunately, the new Honda Civic hasn’t received as many upgrades in the area of performance. Though it now has a slightly improved suspension, thanks to firmer springs, a stiffer anti-roll bar, quieter bushings and a faster steering ratio, everything else in the base model is the same. The sedan features the same old 140-horsepower, 1.8-litre four-cylinder that comes with either a five-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission. The Si model, however, is accompanied by a sportier 201-horsepower, 2.4-litre four-banger, while the Civic Hybrid is here with an IMA mild-hybrid system, which has the fuel economy rating of 5.3 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and highway.

In terms of features, the 2014 Civic brings back most of what was already available last year and implements those features in all the versions of the current lineup. For instance, all the models now have Bluetooth hands-free calling connectivity and audio streaming, text-message functionality, Pandora integration, a rearview camera system and many others. This is not a phenomenal improvement, but it is appreciated all the same.

All-in-all, the Honda Civic is on the right track, with improvements in nearly every area over the dreaded 2012 model. So, if you’re in search of a compact-sedan, the 2014 Honda Civic should be at the top of your list.

Last year, the Honda Civic borrowed many exterior design elements from the most recent Honda Accord, and the 2014 model continues this trend. As such, you’ll notice that it features an “open-mouth” lower bumper, black mesh grille and much more rigid look overall. There are also integrated fog lamps, which appear only in the upper trims, as well as clear-lens cornering lamps. At the back, the rear fascia and lights help to widen the appearance a little bit.

The 2014 Civic Si model has received a set of sporty upgrades, such as new wheels, a black egg crate grille, chrome-tipped exhausts and a very prominent back spoiler. Inside, things look a lot sportier as well, with a darker trim, sport seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and other details.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Honda Civic Sedan features the same old 140-horsepower, 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine that comes with all the models, except for the Si, Hybrid and Natural Gas. It’s available with either a five-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission. Sadly, it doesn’t perform all that well in the high revs or provides enough torque in the low revs, which makes it quite mediocre at best.

As for the 2014 Civic Hybrid – it’s not a “true” hybrid since it’s incapable of moving the car with electric power alone. It features a lithium-ion battery pack, which weighs less than the more dated nickel-metal-hydride battery and takes far less space in the trunk. Between the 1.5-litre engine and Honda’s continuously variable transmission, there’s a 15-kilowatt, or 22-horsepower, electric motor. It provides a slight boost that’s just enough to maintain the city speed of 50 kilometres per hour for a limited time.

The Si model has a 201-horsepower, 2.4-litre four that doesn’t seem to be as responsive as the last year’s engine and even adds road noise. In order to get the most power out of the engine, you have to accelerate it to 7000 rpm.

The fuel economy for most engines is 8.4 or 8.1 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. It’s decent, but not that special.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2014 Honda Civic Sedan comes with plenty of improvements in interior design and special features.

In terms of space, the car offers just about enough to sit comfortably, but not much more. The seats are a bit short and flat, while the windshield often feels too angled. There’s enough legroom at the back, but headroom is a bit lacking, while the seating position feels too curved.

Despite some of these shortcomings, the trunk space is actually very impressive, even in the Civic Hybrid since Honda has replaced the nickel-metal-hydride battery with a much smaller lithium-ion battery pack. However, the Hybrid and Natural Gas models still avoid folding rear seatbacks, which results in much less cargo space.

In terms of special features, all the 2014 Civic models come with cruise control, power windows, a rear-view camera system, 160-watt sound system and Bluetooth and Pandora connectivity. This is an improvement over the 2013 model, which included certain features only in the upper trims.

Safety features:

The 2014 Honda Civic Sedan is one of the top-performing vehicles in its class. It features stability control, anti-lock brakes, side-curtain airbags for both front and back seats and front-seat side bags. The Civic Hybrid also includes standard forward collision warning and lane departure warning systems.

And if you’re still not convinced that this car is safe, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has awarded the 2014 Civic with “good” ratings in every category, including the new small overlap frontal test.
