The 2014 Honda Pilot kicks the majority SUVs out of the ballpark by offering excellent fuel economy, plenty of cabin space and refreshing exterior design. If efficiency, power and comfort are what you’re looking for, then you can’t go wrong with this family SUV.

The 2014 Honda Pilot stands out from the crowded world of SUVs by offering plenty of cabin space, a powerful engine and fantastic fuel economy. Despite its somewhat truck-like appearance, it’s one of the most family-friendly cars on the market – especially for those who can’t bear the idea of owning a minivan. The SUV is available in four different trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L and Touring. All of them come in either 2WD or 4WD, but in order to enjoy the best features the vehicle has to offer, you’ll definitely need to go for top trims. That said, all four models are worth a look since none of them feel subpar. The LX and EX models are good for those who want to find efficiency for a more affordable price, while the other two will fit those who are willing to spend a little more than expected. The most apparent feature in this SUV is its size. It comes with a third row of seats and some extra headroom and cargo space. Its front seats are particularly generously sized, providing extra support for long trips. The second-row seats can be moved back and forth in order to adjust legroom in the second and third rows, both of which provide plenty of space overall. Another important aspect of the 2014 Pilot is its safety features, which are numerous and effective. It includes side-curtain airbags for all three rows as well as a rearview camera. It has earned top scores in all major safety tests, including the ones from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and New Car Assessment Programme. On the powertrain side, the Honda Pilot comes with only one engine: the 3.5-litre, 250-horsepower V-6, which is available with a five-speed automatic transmission. It offers plenty of fuel economy, carrying the EPA highway rating of 25 litres per 100 kilometres. This in effect makes it one of the most efficient SUVs on the market. The handling feels smooth and responsive, which allows you to maneuver the car however you like. In other words, it never feels like a tank. The ride is firm as expected, with the optional all-wheel drive system offering a Lock mode, which works miracles on snowy or muddy roads. Overall, it’s the 2014 Honda Pilot is the kind of car that has enough features to please everyone. It may not be the best in one specific area, but it’s adequate in each area that matters. With the price of $34,990 to $48,750, this car is definitely a worthy investment.

Many crossovers this year are aiming for a much curvier appearance than is traditionally accepted in vehicles of this type. In spite of that, the 2014 Honda Pilot is as boxy as they come, which strangely enough makes it look very refreshing in this day and age. The best part about it, however, is that the “rectangular” shape has become somewhat timeless over the years, which means that this car won’t get outdated as quickly as its rivals. On the inside, the 2014 Pilot is both spacious and functional. All three rows of seating are comfortable and adjustable to suit every need. Design-wise, the cabin features the same angular appearance as on the outside. If there’s one issue here, it would be the look of the upright instrument panel, which is far too cluttered for its own good – to the point of looking ridiculous. Otherwise, this car looks and feels fantastic both on the outside and on the inside.

Power and Performance:The 2014 Honda Pilot offers only a 3.5-litre, 250-horsepower V-6 engine, which comes with a five-speed automatic transmission. That said, you won’t feel like this engine isn’t worth the money because it sounds so smooth and pleasant that you might wonder how you got around without it in the first place. It can also generate 253 pound-feet of torque at 4,800 rpm, which is very impressive in its own right. On the fuel economy side, the average EPA rating for the SUV is 13.8 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 24 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway and 11.8 litres per 100 kilometres combined. These ratings make it one of the most efficient three-row crossovers available.
Interiors and Special Features:The 2014 Honda Pilot offers quality interior design that few cars in its class can match. The materials you’ll find inside are assembled in such a way that they effortlessly exhibit quality, durability and close attention to detail. You’ll be very hard-pressed to start nitpicking. That said, the upright instrument panel does feel a little too cluttered, but that’s easy to overlook. In terms of space, the 2014 Pilot can house up to eight people since it features three seating rows. The second row slides on tracks in order to add space for those sitting in the third row. And speaking of that, the third row is surprisingly comfortable, coming with large windows and enough space to fit three adults. Still, the front is the roomiest and coziest spot in the car thanks to its awesome seats. The driver gets a 10-way power seat, which offers excellent comfort and support, while the front passenger can enjoy the 4-power seat, which sadly does not adjust for height, but that shouldn’t be a problem. In terms of special features, the EX-L and Touring models come with leather, USB/iPod connectivity, Bluetooth, navigation and a power lift gate. If you’re looking to plug in your USB stick, get ready to pick the navigation system as one of your options because you won’t be able to do it otherwise. And if you’re looking to save some money, the base models are not bad either since they have plenty of features too, including rear air conditioning, keyless entry, cruise control and a seven-speaker sound system.
Safety features:The 2014 Honda Pilot has won praises from several road safety organizations, including the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and New Car Assessment Programme. The IIHS has awarded the car with top “good” ratings in all categories, while the NCAP’s crash-test has earned it four out of five stars. The Honda Pilot features front side airbags, side-curtain bags in all three rows and active head restraints. All 2014 models also include a rearview camera, electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes. It’s clear that the Pilot deserves all the praise it gets, so if safety is your main concern, then this car will have you covered.
