The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has come a long way since its original origins as a military utility vehicle. It now serves as a very capable and powerful full-size luxury SUV. The G-Class is targeted at car buyers who are seeking a very specific rugged look. The G-Class was first introduced back in 1979, and as mentioned, it served very different purposes in the past. Now over three decades and countless updates later, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a vehicle that will appeal to the true adventurer. The 2015 G550 is the base version of the G-Class that comes with sufficient standard equipment to make it more appealing than you would imagine. The distinct exterior look, luxurious interior space, sophisticated technology and extremely capable powertrain make this vehicle an attractive one, but for many it may come down to the cost.

There is no mistaking a Mercedes-Benz G550 on the road, as there really is nothing left that looks like this vehicle. The rugged, boxy and aggressive shape is really one of a kind, with old-school flavour and new-school details. The G550 is committed to being a capable vehicle first and foremost, which gives it a very unique style. The look of the vehicle is defined by its straight lines and various cut-outs, which give this vehicle its rugged appearance. The G550 comes standard with some useful features, such as stainless-steel running boards, rain-sensing wipers, a sunroof and parking sensors. There are also a lot of upgrades available on this vehicle that can be added to put it into the higher-tier G63 AMG model. But, regardless of how you build this vehicle, the G550 is a well-equipped, boxy beast that will either be super attractive or super repulsive to you.

The interior of the G550 takes a step back from the military look and focuses a bit more on being a luxurious space for those who have spent a lot of money to be there. While there are still hints of the rugged exterior that carry over inside, such as the exposed hinges, the cabin is built with the most premium materials in mind – it is a Mercedes after all. The cabin is almost entirely handcrafted, and has premium leather covering the dash and seats. Wood trim and chrome accents can also be found throughout. The cabin is not hard-pressed for space either. Thanks to the boxy shape, the headroom is seemingly endless, and while taller passengers might hope for a bit more legroom, the overall comfort level is great. Cargo capacity is also generous with over 45 cubic feet available behind the rear bench.

The G550 also comes with an impressive list of standard technology features, which will surely meet the requirements of any tech-savvy car shopper. The G550 is equipped with Mercedes’ own infotainment system known COMAND. Through a seven-inch touchscreen, this system controls all of the features pertaining to entertainment and information. Bluetooth functions for audio and phone are also standard, along with a six-DVD changer with video-playing capability. A 40GB hard drive is built into the system with space reserved for saving maps and music. The technology features on the vehicle are endless, and there will be little room to question what the $100,000+ is going towards.

The G550 is equipped with one, very capable powertrain that puts some purpose behind the very rugged look. Under the hood of the G550 is a 5.5 litre V-8 engine that generates 382 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission with a high degree of manual gear control. One major downfall of driving such a beast of a vehicle is the poor fuel rating. The G550 burns 19.6 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 15.7 l per 100 kilometres on the highway. Needless to say, if you are concerned about gas mileage you should probably start looking elsewhere.

Overall, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz G550 is without a doubt a very capable and extremely unique vehicle to own and drive. Although it embraces its historic past in design, the modern touches, such as the tech features, are second to none. If gas-guzzling and car payments fall below the importance of beastliness on your priorities, then theG550 is worth a look.

Power and Performance:

The two G-Class models are defined by their powertrains. The G550 sports Mercedes' widely used, smoothly stalwart 388-horsepower V-8 engine with 391 pound-feet of torque, coupled to a seven-speed automatic with a high degree of manual gear control. It's a well-sorted drivetrain, smooth in highway driving and docile until it's not. In the 5,600-pound G550, the normally aspirated V-8 and automatic combine for acceleration to 60 mph of 6.0 seconds; it'll reach a limited top speed of 130 mph, but it struggles to achieve a 12/15 mpg fuel economy rating.

Interiors and Special Features:

Dressed more for success than for grudge-matching it out with Mother Nature, the G-Class cabin hides its rugged origins beneath a nicer veneer of wood and leather this year. The regular shapes, exposed door hinges, flat door panels, and tall glass areas keep the bygone flair intact, but hosing it out after a day completely off the beaten path? No, you won't be doing that, not with all this lush finery covering up the G-Wagen's formerly bare bones.

Neither of the organizations that crash-test vehicles to assess their safety have rated the 2015 G-Class or any of its recent ancestors, but we're giving it high marks thanks to its sheer mass and long list of safety features, as a long history of Mercedes models engineered well for safety.
