Quick Look

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz B250 is a neat little hatchback that delivers solid exterior design, decent engine and comfortable cabin. If there is one issue with this vehicle, it would be the fact that it’s extremely underrated here in Canada – likely due to its small size yet somewhat demanding price tag of $31,300 (at least by North American standards, where bigger is still seemingly better).

Full Review

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz B250 is the latest iteration of the German compact hatchback that still only gets sold in Canada and Europe. So, if you live in the United States, but you still want to get your hands on it – then tough luck (or you could just buy it here)! To be fair though, the B250 is only a quarter of what’s known overseas as the B-Class, which consists of multiple models and powertrains. Here we only get two trims and one engine.

The newest model serves up updated styling and features, along with optional all-wheel drive. As far as we are concerned, it’s one of the most underrated hatchbacks in Canada – right up there with the Toyota Matrix as far as neglect goes.

The newest B250 differentiates itself from the previous generation, which debuted in 2012, with a new front fascia. The lower part of the revamped front bumper has a more upright look to it, while the new grille insert has two louvres as opposed to three. LED headlights are now available as an option for the first time, while the daytime running lights are integrated with the headlights. At the back, you get an updated bumper, which features new lines and subtle chrome band.

Inside, the new Mercedes-Benz B250 saw a major overhaul since last year, offering a new steering wheel, new materials, dash design improved by an eight-inch monitor and available keyless entry. The rear seats and cargo space are still very impressive, offering more rear legroom than the E-Class sedan along with decent bolstering and other forms of adjustments. The cargo floor is low enough to fit tall items and high enough to let you load whatever you want easily. If you want to expand the cargo area, the 60/40 split rear seats with the centre pass-through are easy to fold.

Under the hood, the 2015 B250 offers only one engine – a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that produces 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It’s connected to a seven-speed automatic transmission with standard paddle shifters, which allow the driver to shift manually. The start/stop function is here as well, somewhat improving the vehicle’s already solid fuel efficiency by automatically shutting it down when it’s stopped.

Overall, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz B250 is a solid hatchback that offers everything a vehicle of this kind needs. It does command a surprisingly high price though – especially when compared to other hatchbacks on the market in Canada. So, if $31,300 is a little too much for you, then you might feel more inclined to look for a different vehicle.

Safety features:

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz B250 is every bit as safe as its predecessor, which is saying a lot since the B250 is one of the safest luxury hatchbacks on the market. Its features include electronic stability control, ABS and driveline traction control, side impact beams, forward collision mitigation, low tire pressure warning and an airbag occupancy sensor. Occupants also get dual stage driver and passenger seat-mounted side and front airbags, curtain airbags for the first and second rows, as well as driver knee and rear side-impact airbags. Our favourite safety feature is an assist system that monitors driver fatigue.
