Full Review

Some see the 2014 Toyota Venza as a vehicle that defies categorization. It’s an SUV, a crossover and a wagon, and yet it’s neither of them. It borrows the best features from each of these to create a spacious and slick-looking package that’s perfect for outdoor adventures and long trips with your family.

In terms of the overall appearance, it’s hard to ignore how SUV-like it appears to be. That said it’s a little too short to be called a proper SUV since it’s more of a wagon at heart, but with some additional space. Calling it a crossover wouldn’t cut it either due to its acute similarity to wagons.

If you’ve already seen the 2013 Venza, then you won’t find much new to see in the 2014 model. The only real additions are a set of power-folding side mirrors, new grille and front and rear parking sonar (but that’s for Limited models only).

On the inside, things could be a little better, however, since Venza’s interior seems to be slightly overpopulated by low-quality pieces, like fake wood trim and ugly-looking plastics. The front seats could use a little more space too since the driver’s and front passenger’s knees often come in contact with plastic. The good part is that there’s plenty of space in the back for passengers and cargo.

Under the hood, the 2014 Venza is quite impressive as well. It comes with a standard four-cylinder engine, which is adequate but not overly impressive. Those looking for something a little more special can buy a model with a V6 engine. It provides an additional amount of power, while getting the same fuel economy. Both engines are paired with an automatic transmission as well as a front- or all-wheel drive. If there’s one real complaint that can be levelled against the vehicle in the performance department, it’s that the steering may sometimes feel a little off, which makes it a little less fun to drive.

And yet despite some of the flaws, the new Venza is a worthy successor to its 2013 counterpart. Toyota may not have taken it to new heights, but that shouldn’t matter – because it’s still a quality vehicle that’s well worth your money.

The 2014 Toyota Venza is a wagon, SUV and crossover all in one, featuring the properties of a tall wagon and visual appeal of an SUV.

Toyota has given Venza a significant overhaul in 2013, which is why the 2014 model hasn’t taken quite as many innovative steps, looking almost the same as its older sibling. The most noticeable additions include a new grille and a set of power-folding side mirrors. Toyota also had enough courage to remove certain colour combinations, like the Cosmic Grey paint with Ivory fabric or leather interiors and the Sunsent Bronze paint with Black fabric or leather. Outside of those changes the new model is identical to the last one.

Power and Performance:

First and foremost, the Toyota Venza isn’t for those seeking the thrill of high speeds – it’s a family vehicle. However, it’s not the slowest car on the market either.

Toyota offers a choice of two engines: a 182-horsepower, 2.4-litre four-cylinder and a 268-horsepower, 3.5-litre V-6. Both engines are available with front- or all-wheel drive and both have similar EPA gas mileage ratings. The four-cylinder rates at 10.0 litres per 100 kilometres city and 7.1 litres per 100 kilometres highway. The V-6 AWD, on the other hand, rates at 11.4 litres per 100 kilometres city and 7.9 litres per 10 kilometres highway. The V-6 engine also adds Towing Prep Package that allows 3,500 pounds of towing capacity.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2014 Toyota Venza offers an almost ideal seating height since it’s not quite as tall as most crossover and not as short as most wagons. This allows adult passengers to enter and exit easily. There is plenty of head and leg room, with the back bench reclining to create more space for those who need it. Unfortunately, there’s no third row option since this is a five-seat vehicle (and not quite an SUV, as was already mentioned).

The car has a low cargo floor, which makes loading and unloading of items quick and easy. The back seat also folds down to create extra space. However, there are no cargo organizers in the back load area. Throughout the cabin there’s an ample amount of storage bins, cubbies and cup holders to contain smaller items. If there’s one problem with the interiors, it’s the amount of ugly-looking plastics that come too often in contact with the driver’s and front passenger’s knees, compromising some comfort.

Safety features:

The all-new Toyota Venza has received a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration thanks to a strong collection of standard safety features. Those include seven airbags, electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes. The car can also be upgraded to include a backup camera, which can be useful when entering or backing out of tight parking spots.
