The 2014 Toyota Tacoma matches practicality with versatility perfectly. The mid-sized platform offers a variety of options and features that will match the needs of anyone looking for an affordable, practical, do-anything truck.

Pickup trucks don't always have to be about excessive power and strength. The muscle-bound all-powerful full-sized pickups with massive V-8 engines are necessary for some applications, but aren't at all practical for others. Mid-sized trucks offer the practicality of smaller, more efficient engines and enough strength to take on large projects.

The 2014 Toyota Tacoma offers many excellent features for buyers looking to get work done without showing off unnecessary muscle. If you need to tow your entire house, the Tacoma is not for you. If you want a practical truck that—when properly equipped—can tow around 6,500 lbs (2,950 kg), keep you and your family comfortable, and maintain affordable fuel economy, the Tacoma might be worth looking at.A base MSRP of around $22,000 makes the Tacoma an affordable alternative to larger trucks.

Toyota first released the Tacoma in 2005 and the 2014 model looks very similar. It fills a practical market. Why change something drastically when it already works great? Upgrades in technology have brought new features. In 2014 a touchscreen is standard on all models—even the Regular Cab variant with hand-crank windows has a state-of-the-art 6.1-inch touchscreen with iPod/USB connectivity. This pickup feels new. It fits right in with the latest cars and gadgets.

From the Regular Cab model to the Tacoma Limited you can get everything from a simple four-cylinder economical work truck to a go-anywhere all-climate four-wheel drive truck that can go to work and transport your family in comfort. There aren't many vehicles that match the Tacoma's economy and versatility. The 2014 Honda Ridgeline comes to mind—but it is built on a car chassis. The only true rival to the Tacoma is the 2014 Nissian Frontier.

The 2014 Toyota Tacoma has three cab configurations: Regular, Access and Double Cab. The Access Cab has small rear-hinged doors and the Double Cab serves as the crew cab styled model.

The standard features on the rear-wheel drive Tacoma Regular Cab include: 15-inch wheels, air-conditioning, bedliner, utility rails, a cloth bench seat, Bluetooth connectivity, a touch screen display with iPod/USB connectivity, an aux audio input jack and 15-inch steel wheels. The 6.1 inch touchscreen display and tech features feel strange in the Tacoma Regular Cab as power windows and locks aren't included.

The RWD Access Cab adds power locks and windows, bucket seats with a centre and overhead console to replace the bench and improves the style of the cloth upholstery. The Access Cab also includes fold-up rear seats and cup holders for rear passengers. The Tacoma Double Cab has additional exterior features—black fenders—and power mirrors, a split rear bench seat with headrests, rear climate vents and rear storage. The Double Cab model shortens the bed to five feet. With four-wheel drive models you get black fenders, increased ride height, 16-inch wheels and an engine skid plate on all models. You can also opt for the PreRunner, a RWD Tacoma with the features of the 4WD versions.

You can upgrade all Access and Double cab models with a choice of two packages. A Convenience Package includes power mirrors, keyless entry, cruise control, sliding rear window and audio controls on the steering wheel. The SR5 package adds chrome on the grille and rear bumper, fog lights for V-6 models, adjustable lumbar support for the driver seat, variable wipers, improved instrument trim, sun visors with mirrors and a rearview camera. The Limited package, only available on the V-6 Double Cab Tacoma includes all of the SR5 features plus leather upholstery, an upgraded touchscreen, satellite radio, a navigation system, the Entune mobile-app software suite, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, extended chrome trim and 18-inch wheels.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Toyota Tacoma has the option of rear or front-wheel drive and two engine choices—the base 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine or a larger 4.0-litre V-6. To help boost fuel economy, the four-cylinder engine is standard on all models except the 4WD double cab. Regular and Access Cab models come with a standard five-speed manual transmission. The PreRunner Access and Double Cab models are built with a four-speed automatic. The automatic transmission is an option on all of the other models.

The base engine is ample for a mid-sized truck. The 2.7-litre four-cylinder produces 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. Tacoma's larger V-6 offers 236 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. Toyota's Variable Value Timing with intelligence (VTT-1)—a system that helps keep torque high at lower horsepower—is included with both engines. This helps reduce the need for a larger more inefficient engine and transmission combination.

The four-cylinder and five-speed manual RWD models keep fuel use down to an estimated 10.2 L/100km. The automatic transmission decreases efficiency, lowering fuel economy to 11.2 L/100km. As always, four-wheel drive increases fuel consumption further with a 12.4 L/100km rating.

Adding the V-6 engine reduces fuel economy, but provides substantial increases in power and torque. The V-6 automatic with RWD boasts 12.4 L/100km. Adding four-wheel drive only reduces fuel usage to 13.1 L/100km.  Overall, the Tacoma is a mid-size truck that offers slightly better fuel performance than its zesty competitor – the Nissan Frontier.

Interiors and Special Features:

This mid-sized pickup's interior is friendly for the entire family but durable and practical enough for work use. Solid hard-plastic black panels line the dashboard and side panels. The instrument cluster has an unassuming practicality. Control knobs for climate control are three position knobs, so you don't need to fuss around if you are wearing gloves or have dirty hands.

The front seats are mounted too low for some and are a bit firm. The Access Cab offers rear jump seats for cargo or small children while the Double Cab is large enough to provide adults plenty of comfort. The mid-size configuration is a step up from the cramped Nissan Frontier crew cab that offers hardly any room for passengers in the back.

Although practicality is the go-to description, the 2014 Tacoma offers a variety of luxurious features not usually found in pickup trucks. A touch screen display is standard. It allows for iPod/USB and Bluetooth connectivity in all models. A bedliner made of a strong composite comes standard on the Tacoma—a helpful feature that protects the bed from the wear and tear of rough daily use.

Safety features:

A variety of safety features are designed to keep the 2014 Toyota Tacoma safe, including an advanced airbag system with full-length side curtains and front-seat side impact airbags. Front active head restraints, designed to reduce whiplash in rear impact crashes, are standard. Antilock brakes with assist and stability control are standard on all models as well.
