Quick Look

The 2015 MINI Cooper Paceman is a crossover coupe that manages to marry the performance of the infamous Cooper Hardtop model with the effortless practicality of the Countryman. The result is a small vehicle with superb handling, plenty of cargo room and a very slick cabin. Of note is the 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine in the John Cooper Works trim, which can pump out 218 horsepower – very impressive for a vehicle of this size.

Full Review

The 2015 MINI Cooper Paceman serves up several refreshments, most of which are essentially additional customization options, like those seen in the new Countryman model. Now, none of these new introductions are particularly noticeable or memorable, but that's not such a bad thing since the Paceman was introduced only a few years ago. With the new model, you still get its nimble handling, refined cabin and plenty of cargo room.

As you might have already notices, the 2015 Paceman is a crossover coupe that's meant to compete against the likes of the Nissan JUKE and maybe even bigger vehicles such as the Subaru XV. Just like the five-door Countryman, the 2015 Paceman doesn't really offer a lot of noticeable changes, unless we include the addition of the three new colour options. The exterior now also has a shorter hood, extended silhouette – courtesy of the flowing roofline – and tapered side-window graphic. You also get to have standard and optionally available light-alloy wheels with reduced weight. Some of the high-end optional features include LED fog lamps with daytime driving lights, parking lights with LED technology, xenon headlamps, adaptive turning light, a glass push/tilt roof, automatic air conditioning and a removable tow hitch that has a trailer load of up to 2,000 pounds. In the end, however, this is still a MINI Cooper, and it shows.

On the inside, however, the 2015 Paceman is almost the same as the one last year – meaning that you'll still find plenty of charm and elegance here. More specifically, you get the same 2+2 seating configuration and the same centre console tunnel that extends all the way to the back as in the 2014 offering. This means that there is still not enough seating for five. However, everyone does get their own bucket seat. The dash and centre console have not changed at all, except that you can now get sports leather steering wheel with shift paddles for automatic transmission – or a multifunction steering wheel with cruise control. There's a Harman Kardon hi-fi speaker system now, which allows the cabin to feel a touch more high-end than before. When it comes to cargo, the 2015 Paceman offers 38.1 cubic feet of space, but only if you decide to fold the rear seats. If you leave them up, you will only 11.6 cubic feet.

Under the hood, the new MINI Cooper Paceman lets you choose one out of three possible engine configurations, all of which are 1.6-litre four-cylinders. The base four-cylinder produces 122 horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque, while the 1.6-litreTurbo, which you can with the S trim, can yield 190 horsepower. The top-of-the-line John Cooper Works trim has a 1.6-litre Turbo, which produces 218 horsepower.  Naturally, it's the most powerful engine in the lineup, being able to hit the 100-km/h mark in just 6.9 seconds.

Overall, the 2015 MINI Cooper Paceman is an improvement over the last year's model, but it's not a big improvement. If you're not a fan of MINIs, then there's nothing here that will change your mind. If you love these little cars, however, then you'll adore the Paceman too.

Power and Performance:

The 2015 Mini Paceman is set to be offered with a choice of engine configurations, even if each one of them is the same 1.6-liter displacement. The base 1.6L comes with 122 horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque while the 1.6L Turbo for the S trim bumps the output all the way up to 190 horsepower, six ponies more than the 2014 model.

As for the top-of-the-line John Cooper Works trim, you stand to get the same 1.6L Turbo with even more added juice at 218 horsepower. Naturally, the Paceman JCW is the fastest to 62 mph with the capability to do it in just 6.9 seconds. Top speed numbers haven’t been released, but we expect it to be somewhere close to 150 mph.

Interiors and Special Features:

The Countryman and Paceman interiors are as charming as those in other Minis. There's the big round speedometer in the center, plus a bunch of small switches and buttons, a round tachometer, round air conditioning vents, round door pulls, more round things here and there – it's certainly distinctively Mini. Other Minis have the power-window switches low in the center console, but in the Countryman and Paceman, for better or worse, they're on the doors. For 2014 the Countryman has a bench as the only rear-seat choice and the former rail has been replaced by a couple of cup holders with a 12-volt outlet.

Safety features:

The Paceman comes standard with dual front, front side and full-length side curtain airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems.
