Quick Look

This full-size luxury SUV gets a complete redesign for 2015. The Cadillac Escalade ESV is large and ahead of the segment thanks to a wheelbase that’s longer than that of its sibling, being able to fit up to eight passengers. This car fit in almost anything you put into it (within reason, of course).

Full Review

The 2015 Cadillac Escalade ESV returns to market with a vengeance. This full-size luxury SUV has been completely redesigned for 2015 as a tactic to get back to the top spot in the segment. The Escalade has been around since 1999, when it made its debut alongside the GMC Denali. It has since undergone a few overhauls, and the most recent one marks the launch of the fourth generation. The Escalade has always been known for its bold, in-your-face styling, while being a reliable people-hauler. The ESV just takes it to the next level thanks to even more space. This SUV is the perfect option for the driver who has a lot of people to carry around and wants to make a statement doing so.

The Cadillac Escalade ESV gets some exterior redesign work at the front and back end to escalate its bold and aggressive look. The Escalade is famous for its large and flashy road presence, and none of that is missing in this redesign.  New to the 2015 model are full-LED headlights and taillights. There are four crystal light bulbs in the headlights that act as high beams, while the LED taillights brighten in the back. The overall shape of the SUV is boxier with slightly more impactful detailing that is reminiscent of a presidential limo. The grille manages to get larger, and to match the longer wheelbase of the ESV, which has 14 more inches between the front and rear wheelbases than the Escalade. Standard exterior features include 20- or 22-inch chrome alloy wheels, a roof rack, power sunroof and heated power-adjustable mirrors. The balance of style and practicality is really starting to even out in the fourth generation.

The cabin of the Cadillac Escalade ESV also gets a makeover for 2015, which makes it sleeker and more modern. The most notable feature of the Escalade is its sheer size. This vehicle can be configured to carry either seven, with second row captain’s chairs, or eight passengers, with a second-row bench. The added inches to the Escalade improve the legroom for front passengers and driver by about four inches, but don’t do much for the second- and third-row seats. One very key addition to the 2015 model is the power-operated third-row bench that folds flat into the floor. This feature means that you will no longer have to disassemble or remove bulky, heavy seats to improve cargo space in the SUV. This also makes the Escalade more competitive and attractive in the class. The redesigned cabin features premium materials throughout and has an attractive design that is consistent with the rest of the Cadillac lineup. The passenger space is generous as is the cargo space, which is on-par with most other full-size luxury SUVs at 15.2 cubic feet behind the third row and 94.2 cubic feet with the third and second rows stowed.

As far as technology goes, Cadillac ESV has really turned its attention to the design and look of the information and entertainment system, but functionality falls a bit short. Like most other premium brands, Cadillac has introduced a unique system called CUE that takes care of all entertainment and information needs in one place. This infotainment system is set in the middle of the dashboard, which is very visually appealing. The actual operation of the system, however, is frustrating as commands can be slow and, at times, ignored altogether. The standard OnStar system is, as with all General Motors vehicles, a nice customer service addition. The Escalades’ service includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking, stolen vehicle assistance and turn-by-turn navigation.

Under the hood of the Escalade ESV is a 6.2-litre V8 engine that produces 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels. All-wheel drive is also an option on this car. The fuel economy on this car is a standout in the competition, carrying combined ratings of 13.84 litres per 100 kilometers with rear-wheel drive and 14.7 litres per 100 kilometres with all-wheel drive.

Overall, the 2015 Cadillac Escalade ESV has definitely made some much-needed progress with the fourth-generation redesign. It has a better look, some essential standard features, plenty of power and good fuel economy. There is still room for improvements on the technological front, but generally speaking, the Escalade ESV stays true to its DNA as a large, flashy SUV.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2015 Escalade ESV's redesigned cabin features an abundance of premium materials and an attractive interior design that brings it up to date with the rest of the Cadillac lineup. As expected from an SUV of this size, passenger space is also generous. Full-size adults can fit in the front and middle rows comfortably, even for extended road trips. Unlike the standard Escalade, the ESV's third row offers sufficient legroom and only the tallest of passengers would likely complain.
