Full Review

The 2014 Lexus LS 600h L is part of the flagship LS lineup, with which Lexus has established world-class construction and comfort that made this vehicle competitive in the luxury sedan market. The LS 600h L has great refinement and technology aspects that compete with the German brands, but not so much in all-out power and performance. This sedan was first introduced in 1989 and is in its fourth generation. The LS 600h L offers an eco-friendly engine without compromising power and luxury. This five-passenger sedan is perfect for a family and no one will mind riding in the luxurious backseat.

The fourth-generation LS is the most radical-looking iteration of the sedan to date. The bulging hood and large front-end grille gives the sedan an aggressive look that marks its presence on the road. The separated air intakes, slanted headlights, chrome accents and slightly sloped roofline add sporty details to the overall look. Notable standard features on this car are 19-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights, running lights and a new power trunk lid. The extended wheelbase on this L model adds an additional five inches of length, which improves interior space, but also adds weight to the car. The single, well-appointed trim also gives it a very sleek look that proves that efficiency can be sexy.

The cabin of the LS 600h L is riddled with high-quality materials. It has a good balance between style and functionality. The dash is cleanly arranged and there is attractive interior accent lighting. The cabin has a good size, partly because of the additional five inches added to the wheelbase. The driver seat is 12-way power adjustable, while the front passenger seat is 10-way. Both seats come with leather upholstery and can be heated and/or ventilated, while offering memory functions. The rear seats recline and have massage functions. There is a unique bamboo trim that is exclusive to this model and highlights the attention to detail on this luxury sedan.

Part of the reason why a buyer would go for this car over its German counterparts may be because of the great technology aspects. The LS comes standard with a navigation system displayed on a 12.3-inch display. Also new this year is the Siri Eyes Free Interface, which provides additional voice control functionality for newer iPhones. The 19-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound system will also elevate the driving experience in this luxury sedan. If it’s not technology, but rather comfort that enhances your travel experience, then look no further than the Executive Seating Package. This package reduces seating capacity to four passengers, but adds so much more in comfort. It adds infrared cabin temperature sensors, additional leather interior trim, a rear-seat DVD/Blue-ray entertainment system, a right rear seat with a power ottoman and additional massage functions. You will not hear any complaining from the rear cabin with these specs.

Under the hood of the Lexus LS 600h L is a hybrid powertrain comprising of a 5.0-liter V8 engine that produces 389 horsepower and 385 pound-feet of torque and two electric motors/generators. The first one acts as a primary generator and engine starter, while the second one drives the rear wheels and produces power through regenerative braking. The whole system generates 438 horsepower combined, with the power being sent through an all-wheel-drive system and continuously variable transmission. The fuel economy on this hybrid is 11.76 liters per 100 kilometers combined. Unfortunately, this is not much better than the regular gas LS 460, which comes in at a much lower price. The increased weight of this vehicle essentially voids any improved fuel economy, but the price does not reflect that.

The 2014 Lexus LS 600h L is a well-designed premium luxury sedan. While the hybrid’s fuel economy for the value may not make sense, the beautiful amenities and sleek design should distract buyers from that.

Interiors and Special Features:

As the flagship of the Lexus flagship line, the LS 600h L offers abundant luxury. The standard semi-aniline leather on the seats is the automaker's best, and the simulated suede headliner looks rich and is soft to the touch. The optional Executive package brings even more leather into the cabin, while offering the right rear passenger his own ottoman. Rich, grain-matched wood trim is also plentiful, giving the interior a traditional luxury car feel. Particularly striking is the available black interior treatment with bamboo wood trim.
