The 2014 Lexus IS 350 is one of the finest luxury cars on the market, offering several significant improvements over the older models. Available either as a sedan or convertible, this car comes with a slick new body and fine 3.5-litre V6 engine that puts up quite a fight against luxury sedans like the BMW 335i and Audi A4.

The 2014 Lexus IS 350 is a completely different car from its predecessor, offering an all-new look, a fantastic engine and a wide selection of special features. Available either as a sedan or convertible, this new car is an improvement over the previous models in almost every way – even more so than the IS 250. It proves that heading down a slightly different path every once in a while is a good thing.

What you’ll notice first is the new and revised exterior, with IS’s “spindle" grille being the most obvious addition to the proceedings. The F Sport variant also gets a completely black mesh grille, located within the spindle silhouette. This results in an open “jaw” that endows the car with a sporty face. In fact, there’s a sense of sportiness to the whole body, not just the face, thanks to the car’s lovingly chiselled sides and pointy taillights. As a whole, the new Lexus IS looks clean and simple, which is exactly how it should be.

This simplicity and cleanliness can be easily found on the inside as well – since the cabin has received a complete redesign too. Thanks to a two-tier dashboard, everything seems much more upscale and refined. You’ll also notice that the controls in the centre stack have a very clear layout, which makes them incredibly easy to use. The LCD screen could use a few improvements, however, since its display has a surprisingly low resolution. On top of that, the screen isn’t controlled by your fingers, instead relying on a joystick off to the side. It’s not terrible by any means, but it is a bit clunky and unintuitive.

Another issue you’ll encounter is the size of the cabin – it’s just not as spacious as the competition, with the 3-series BMW being much larger. The Lexus is 183.7 inches long overall, featuring a 110.2-wheel base. While these numbers aren’t bad, they’re not exactly great either. The back passengers might have a hard time fitting in, especially if they’re very tall, while some of your cargo may be too big for the IS’s admittedly modest trunk.

Under the hood, you’ll find the very capable 3.5-litre V6, which can pump out 306 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. In comparison, the 250 model can only produce 204 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission as a standard, while the new eight-speed automatic transmission if optional. In general, the IS 350 is clearly the more powerful option out of the two – as it should be.

And unfortunately, the F Sport variants don’t come with additional power, but they do offer better performance. For instance, their steering is noticeably sharper in comparison to the regular IS 350. Other than that, there’s really no reason to spend more money on something like that.

Overall, the 2014 Lexus IS 350 is one of the most respectable cars on the market, even though it doesn’t quite stack up against the likes of Audi A4 and BMW 3-series. Still, if you’re looking for a quality sedan or convertible, there are few similarly-priced cars that can beat a Lexus.

Power and Performance:

In terms of performance, the IS 350 stacks up more competitively. While the lesser IS 250 earned the nickname "Jennifer Slowpez" from senior editor Steven Ewing in his Quick Spin of that model, those looking for both show and go will definitely want to check out this more powerful version. Ponying up $3,515 for the extra liter of direct-injected displacement in this 3.5-liter V6 accounts for 306 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque (up from 204 hp and 185 lb-ft in the IS 250). The bigger engine will also knock more than two ticks from the 0-60 time, for a net of 5.6 seconds.

Better yet, the IS350 suffers only a slight drop in the fuel economy department from the base model, with EPA estimates of 19 miles per gallon in the city and 28 mpg on the highway (compared to the 250's 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway). One of the reasons for this is that the IS 350 – in rear-wheel-drive form only – is equipped with the all-new eight-speed automatic transmission. Sadly, one area that the IS really lags behind the 3 Series, ATS and other sport sedans in its class is that it does not offer a manual transmission.

Speed freaks will still want to wait for the next-gen IS F, but the IS350 is unquestionably a lot of fun to drive. One of the cooler features on this particular model is that the eight-speed transmission is incorporated with a G-force sensor, which can detect when the car is being driven a little more spiritedly and then provide automatic rev matching. In all honesty, the automated programming of the transmission did well enough on its own; using the shift paddles may have actually lessened the fun.

Selectable driving modes play a part in the experience, too. The standard IS 350 has three of them – Eco, Normal and Sport – all of which are configurable using a dial on the center console. Response to throttle input is noticeably different in all three modes, as are shift points.

Interiors and Special Features:

Complementing its substantial exterior makeover, the 2014 Lexus IS sedan also receives a refreshed cabin. The overall look coincides with Lexus' sophisticated new interior design language, which first appeared in the latest GS sedan. The conventional and capacitive touch switches are easy to operate, as is the mouse-like joystick that governs the infotainment system. Rear legroom is up 1.6 inches over the outgoing model, a small yet crucial increase that makes it far more livable than before. Front and rear headroom is likewise generous. Inspired by the Lexus LFA supercar, F Sport models feature a futuristic digital instrument cluster with a sliding mechanical bezel. Like the IS C, IS F models carry over mostly unchanged lest for some updates to upholstery and accents.

Safety features:

The 2014 Lexus IS offers many available features that enhance safety on the road, including subscription-free traffic and weather updates in the new infotainment system, ten airbags, lane departure warning, blind spot notification, and cross-traffic warning all standard.

And it's earned a top five-star Overall Rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), including four-star frontal results and top five-star results for side impact and rollover. Versus the outgoing 2013 IS, which had earned four stars overall, stronger side-impact results pushed the new 2014 IS 250 that was tested up to its five-star result.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rates the 2014 Lexus IS with its top mark of "good" in moderate overlap and side-impact crash tests, but only "basic" in front crash prevention, though the IIHS hasn't yet tested the optional forward crash prevention system of the 2014 IS.
