The 2014 Jeep Compass is a mediocre vehicle at best, offering a so-so set of engines, decent special features and barely Jeep-like exterior design. The worst part is the car’s absolutely horrendous-looking cabin that seems to be more unbalanced and colourless than it has any right to be.

The 2014 Jeep Compass does exactly what its predecessors were meant to do, delivering improvements in virtually every area. That said, the Compass has never been the poster-child of excellence, continuously offering less than a car of this caliber should. The new incarnation makes the biggest impact with its special features, but lacks in the areas of cabin comfort and design. Performance could also use some work, but we’ll get to that later.

The first thing we should look at is the car’s exterior design, which now bears a strong resemblance to the Grand Cherokee. When the Compass was launched back in 2007, along with the Patriot, it looked very similar to the Jeep Wrangler thanks to its strong front fascia. So, even though it was based on the Dodge Caliber, it looks virtually nothing like it. And with its narrow track and tiny tires, it looks more like a small hatchback than a true Jeep. Whether it’s a flaw or an enhancement is up to you, but we think that if you’re going with Jeep brand, then it should look like an actual Jeep.

On the inside, the 2014 Jeep Compass features plenty of soft-touch materials, especially on the door trim. You also get a comfortable centre armrest and a steering wheel that comes with a nice grip. Other things to watch out for include a Uconnect media centre that has an iPod interface, Sirius satellite radio and navigation, cup holders with lights in them and liftgate speakers. While all these features are nice in their own right, none of them amount to anything attractive because the overall design is so unbalanced that it’s just painful to look at.

Engine-wise, you get two of them, and both of them are just okay. The base 2.0-litre four-cylinder gives you 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque, which is rather weak. The second engine is optional, but it offers more power for not a very big price hike. This 2.4-litre four-cylinder delivers 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet. It’s also available as a standard in the more expensive Limited trim and absolutely necessary if you’re going for one of the four-wheel-drive packages.

Overall, the 2014 Jeep Compass is not a terrible vehicle, but as far as Jeeps, it’s below the standard. What’s worse is that it doesn’t even look like a Jeep. We recommend overlooking this car in favour something a little more accommodating – like the Ford Escape or Mitsubishi RVR.

Power and Performance:

The base engine on the Compass remains a 158-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder ‘World Engine,’ while top Limited models come with a 172-hp, 2.4-liter version; a five-speed manual gearbox is standard, while the six-speed automatic is offered as a step up across the lineup.

The six-speed brings a higher top gear for lower revs at highway cruising speeds, while there’s also a low 4.21 first gear for stronger launches—plus AutoStick manual control. The new automatic is also essentially maintenance-free, with a sealed-for-life design, with no dipstick and no flushes or fills required.

It's also as much of an improvement in drivability as you might think; in a short spin, we found the new automatic transmission in the Compass to be not only more responsive, but more settled. Otherwise, we've found manual-gearbox versions of the Compass to have decent drivability, although a notchy shifter and imprecise clutch behavior sapped some of the enjoyment.

We'll add more impressions on the new automatic as soon as we can spend more time with one.

Interiors and Special Features:

The interior of the 2014 Jeep Compass includes soft-touch materials on the door trim, a comfortable center armrest and a steering wheel that provides decent feel and grip. Other details include a Uconnect media center with iPod interface, available Sirius satellite radio and navigation, illuminated cup holders, liftgate speakers and fold-flat rear seats. The end result is not unattractive, but pricing for a well-equipped Compass can easily climb into the $30,000 range.

Safety features:

Standard safety equipment includes anti-lock brakes with 4-wheel discs on all-wheel-drive models but inferior rear drums on front-wheel-drive models (except Limited FWD), stability control and six airbags (front, front-side and full-length side curtain).

Last year's Compass received a disappointing three stars overall in government crash tests, including three stars for frontal impacts and four for side impacts. However, the tested models lacked the then-optional front-side airbags, which are standard for 2014 -- and the government has yet to test a 2014 Compass. Nonetheless, the 2014 Compass was tested for frontal impacts and received the same 3-star frontal rating as last year, so it will remain a subpar safety performer regardless.
