Quick Look

The 2014 Infiniti QX70 brings no new offerings for 2014 other than a new name (previously the FX). This sport-luxury cross over continues to be a great option for those who favour style and performance over cargo capacity.

Full Review

The 2014 Infiniti QX70 is essentially an elevated sports sedan. It most closely resembles the Q50 (formally the G37) offering drivers a nimble character unrivaled by most crossovers. With that being said what the QX70 delivers in performance, style and technology it lacks in cargo capacity, rear seat space and a comfortable ride. Both the V8 and V6 engines that are available for the vehicle are powerful options that complement the cool styling well.

The exterior of this car delivers a cool concept-style shaping. The four-door vehicle has a coupe-like curvy look, which hasn’t changed much since its days as the FX simply because it hasn’t needed to. While the attempt to create a fast, sleek shape with a tall-wagon body usually looks a bit awkward, the QX70 is a standout in how this design can be visually appealing. The sloping roofline gives the car an interesting look, but presents some space issues in the car’s rear cabin. Both trim lines available in this model offer solid standard features for its class. The V6-powered QX70 3.7 comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, a sunroof, power-folding heated outside mirrors and a power liftgate. Optional packages such as the Premium and the Deluxe Touring package will upgrade your wheels, offer aluminum roof rails, automatic wipers and adaptive headlamps. The V8-powered QX70 5.0 trim line includes most of these options standard.

Moving into the interior of this sleek crossover will be pleasantly inviting offering a distinctive design theme with premium details. The five-passenger cabin uses top-end materials such as quilted leather and wood trims in just the right moderation. The major design downfall for this vehicle is the cluttered looking instrument panel as Infiniti does not have a system, such as BMW’s iDrive, to combine the technology on a single interface. Rear seating is a bit tight due to a slopping roofline and the small cargo area draws similarities to a muscle-bound hatchback rather than a true utility vehicle. Standard in the 3.7 trim line are keyless ignition and entry, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated eight-way power front seats with driver lumbar adjustments, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a manual tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. On the tech side, you will get a back-up camera, Bluetooth phone connectivity, a seven-inch colour information display and an 11-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system with satellite radio and CD player, an iPod/USB input and auxiliary audio jack. Optional upgrades offered in the different packages offer front-seat memory setting, a 360-degree parking camera system, front and rear parking sensors, a navigation system with real-time traffic, quilted leather seating, ventilated front seats, aluminum pedals, maple wood trim and a cargo cover. The 5.0 trim line comes standard with most of these options.

The most attractive features about the QX70 are the design elements that make looking at and sitting in this car a luxurious experience. The exterior design is incomparable as far as sport-luxury crossover vehicles go. Moving into the interior, the choice of products such as supple leather, rich wood trim, brushed metal accents and cool ambient lighting are what really attracts buyers to this vehicle. The technology in this crossover, while not having a single control system, still rivals those in its class. The 360-degree camera is a great option that makes city parking a breeze. As for safety, both trim lines come standard with antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Upgrades available for both the 3.7 and 5.0 include a lane-departure warning system and forward mitigation system with automatic braking.

Powering the QX70 3.7 trim line is a 3.7-liter V6 engine that delivers 325 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. This trim comes with a seven-speed automatic with manual shift control and rear-wheel drive with an option to upgrade to all-wheel drive. The EPA estimated fuel economy for rear-wheel drive is a combined 12.38 liters per 100 kilometers. In the all-wheel drive version, fuel economy is  slightly worse at a combined 13.07 liters per 100 kilometers. Inside the 5.0 trim is a 5.0-liter V8 engine the produces 390 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. This trim is also only available with a seven-speed automatic manual shift control transmission, but comes standard with AWD. The fuel economy on this trim falls behind at a combined 14.7 liters per 100 kilometres.

The 2014 Infiniti QX70 combines the look of a coupe, performance of a sport sedan and cabin details of a luxury vehicle that make it a stand out in its class. It drives with weight, but is still able to hit 100 kilometers per hour in the seven-second range. With the exception of some cabin noise, driving this powerful crossover is a wonderful experience.

Power and Performance:

The Infiniti QX70 isn't just powerful and quick to take off from stoplights. It's one of the few crossovers that feels at home on a curvy mountain road; with underpinnings derived from Infiniti's sport sedan, it drives with a poise that's almost foreign to this kind of vehicle.

You don't need the V-8 if you want a vehicle with a lot of get-up-and-go. In '3.7' models, the 3.7-liter, 328-hp V-6 is shared with other Infinitis; and while it's not quite as smooth as the V-6 engines found in some other crossovers, it allows acceleration to 60 mph in the low 7.0-second range.

Interiors and Special Features:

Step up and into the 5-passenger QX70 SUV, and it feels more like a sports sedan, from the curved dash to the oblong analog clock. Flowing lines help the Infiniti stand out from hard-angled surfaces of other more rugged SUVs. In the FX, a driver-centric cockpit with a pronounced center-stack confirms the message that this luxury vehicle is for driving first. The front seats are roomy and comfortable, but the 3-passenger rear bench is surprisingly stingy, more comparable to a compact car. Cargo room is also compromised because of the QX70's swooping rear roof, which also creates blind spots. Thankfully, the rear seats fold to haul larger items.

Safety features:

Standard safety equipment on every Infiniti QX70 includes 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake assist, electronic traction and stability control, front side-impact airbags and front and rear side-curtain airbags.

The 2014 Infiniti QX70 did exceptionally well in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's offset and side-impact crash testing but was not tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
