Look familiar? Don’t be surprised. The Infiniti Q50 is this year’s new and improved G37. It brings with it new styling, new technology, a hybrid-powered counterpart, and several other features that will make your car ride as pleasant as possible. You can expect the same sporty ride that the G37 gave, but with this year’s improvements it’ll be more than just that.



The 2014 Q50 is the first step to Infiniti’s plan to rename all of their vehicles. All cars will now be Q’s and all crossovers and SUVs will be QX’s. To power the 2014 Infiniti Q50, you have a choice of two engines. The first is a 3.7-litre 6-cylinder engine which produces 328-horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. The Q50 Hybrid Model gets a massive 360-horsepower thanks to the combined power of the electric motor as well as the 3.5-litre engine.

The 2014 Q50 is available in an automatic 7-speed transmission with the option of all-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive. You can expect the regular 3.5-litre engine to get you about 11.76L/100km city driving and 7.8L/100km on the highway. The Hybrid model will get you about 8.11L/100km city driving and 6.53L/100km on the highway.

Borrowing heavily from the Infiniti essence concept, the 2014 Infiniti Q50 has a double-arched front grille, LED headlights and LED daytime running lights. The new exterior design is extremely aerodynamic with a coefficient of drag of just 0.26 and zero lift front and rear. More importantly, the new Q50 looks stunning. Infiniti really paid attention to the details when designing this car, every twist and curve comes together beautifully and begs the eye to notice its handsome looks.

Inside, the Q50 features Infiniti’s Intuition System. This means that any customizable features for the driver and vehicle are stored in your key. If you switch keys the settings will change automatically to accommodate the new driver. A wonderful feature in the Infiniti Q50 is the hard buttons in the steering wheel which control the entertainment console. Some drivers prefer a physical button over the touchscreen, and the buttons are very easy to read and use. Infiniti also widened the rear doors for easier entry and exit for second row passengers. In the back, you’ll find plenty of leg and headroom and enough space to comfortable sit three adults.

The cargo space in the trunk of the regular sedan is about 13.52 cubic feet while the Hybrid loses some of it thanks to its battery and has about 9.4 cubic feet in the trunk.

Many aspects of the 2014 Q50 are customizable. You can pick how much throttle response you want, where the shift points are, and the steering feel. The result? A pleasant, smooth ride and a car that’s super fun to drive. The improved performance allows for easier handling and improved acceleration. Of course, on the Hybrid model you’ll see a bit of a sluggish start until the gas-engine kicks in and helps the electric motor out. Otherwise, the car is wonderful inside and out.

No matter which Q50 model you choose for 2014, you get a V-6 engine. While that might not deliver the base fuel economy numbers that shoppers are increasingly expecting, it does deliver in performance.

The Q50 3.7 is powered by the familiar VQ37—a 3.7-liter V-6 with 328 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. And then a new Q50 Hybrid model has joined the lineup, offering 360 combined horsepower plus improved performance and fuel economy.

In either version, a seven-speed automatic with a manual mode is the sole transmission offered. Paddle shift controls are available. All-wheel drive will be an option on either model. The manual gearbox is gone this year—it got thrown by the wayside in Infiniti's quest to put more refinement and technology into the Q50—but we're told it's not completely a lost hope for next year.

Although the engine itself hasn't changed, it's no longer nearly as ragged and coarse as it was in the G37. Engineers put a lot of effort into smoothing and isolating, with new intake and exhaust manifolds, as well as other measures that aid drivability in the middle of the rev range.

The seven-speed automatic transmission has been refined a bit, too, but the big change is that it's been given a taller final-drive ratio. Infiniti has lost 50 pounds in the new car—mostly in the structure—and you take off from a standing start with plenty of verve despite the taller effective ratio. Lower revs in higher-speed cruising (less than 2,500 rpm at 75 mph) is the other big advantage—to contribute to the quiet inside and raise this powertrain's mileage up to 11.76L/100km city, 7.8L/100km with rear-wheel drive.

Interiors and Special Features:

The Q50 continues Infiniti tradition with a cleanly styled cabin that features rich materials (with a choice of genuine aluminum or wood accents), supportive seats and ample room front and rear. The Sport model's front seats also provide power-adjustable bolsters to further tailor lateral support.

The biggest interior change this year is the handsome, down-sweeping center stack that houses a new large central touchscreen. Actually, the new InTouch electronics interface utilizes two stacked displays (8-inch and 7-inch) that offer drivers the ability to display and customize different information on each screen. The touchscreen interface works pretty well, as do smartphone app integration and the redundant controller for the navigation system. In our experience, though, the screens can wash out in direct sunlight.

Thankfully, InTouch continues Infiniti's philosophy of providing user-friendly infotainment interfaces. There are redundant hard buttons for both the climate control and audio systems arranged logically around the lower touchscreen. We wish the radio also had a traditional tuning knob rather than a rocker switch, but overall we like the touchscreen's large virtual buttons and ease of smartphone integration.

Trunk capacity for non-hybrid Q50 models measures 13.5 cubic feet, which is pretty roomy for this class of car. The Infiniti Q50 Hybrid's battery pack and related components reduce that number to 9.4 cubes.

Safety features:

Every Infiniti Q50 sedan comes standard with antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags and side curtain airbags. A rearview camera is standard on all Q50 trims. The Infiniti Connection service includes roadside assistance, automatic collision notification, stolen vehicle reporting and remote door unlocking.

Available safety features (grouped in various packages) include a 360-degree parking camera system, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot/lane departure warning and prevention, and forward/back-up collision warning systems (which can automatically apply the brakes if a collision is deemed imminent). There's also Active Lane Control which can sense changing road surfaces or crosswinds and automatically add minor steering corrections, thus reducing driver effort and fatigue.

In our testing, we recorded a 60-0 mph stopping distance for a Q50 Premium of 123 feet, which is about average for cars in this segment wearing all-season tires. A Q50 Hybrid Sport with its summer tires performed the feat in 117 feet -- longer than average for a sport sedan wearing summer performance tires.
