The 2014 Chevrolet Spark is a good-looking little bugger with a brand new continuously variable transmission for this year’s model. It’s the perfect little city car for a teenager in the house or anyone who is looking for a new vehicle that won’t break the bank. Not only is this little compact car amazing on gas, it offers a great ride that’s extremely fun and comfortable.
The 2014 Chevrolet Spark is a cute little car that gets a cute little engine, a 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine to be exact, which puts out 84-horsepower and 83 pound-feet of torque. This engine is hooked up to a brand new continuously variable transmission and is available in a manual transmission that we highly recommend, it makes the car much sprightlier.
The 2014 Spark is the perfect city car as it zips around relatively quickly for a car in its class and it’s extremely manoeuvrable. However, on the highway, passing other cars can be a pain in the neck as the car is a bit slow to accelerate and really does not want to put in the extra effort to shift into a lower gear.
While it’s definitely not a powerhouse, the Spark offers amazing fuel efficiency, clocking in at 7.35 L/100km in the city and 6.19 L/100km on the highway. In comparison to the Fiat 500, the Chevy Spark returns much better mileage and also rides much better. Even when the road isn’t straight, it doesn’t feel like it’s tugging at the wheels with its super short wheelbase and the ride is extremely compliant. The 2014 Spark definitely surprised us when it came to the amazingly comfortable ride once you get behind the wheel.
One area where the new Chevrolet Spark falls short is in its continuously variably transmission. Chevrolet has yet to really master the CVT and doesn’t make full use of the engine’s capabilities. Manufacturers like Toyota and Nissan have mastered the art of the CVT and have successfully made it an advantage point when buying their vehicles. The 2014 Spark proves that Chevrolet has a bit of homework to do when it comes to the CVT, otherwise, the car offers a great ride.
The interior of the Spark has comfortable seats and also features a very neat 7-inch display which can run apps right off of your smartphone. The centre console is neatly laid out and extremely simple to use. The instrument cluster in the dashboard is simple and easy to read. It features a digital display, giving it more of a modern feel. The seats are comfortable and offer good support. Room is a bit tight in the back, but not bad for long road trips.
Overall, the 2014 Chevrolet Spark is a great city car that will get you where you need to go while riding in style. This funky little compact starts at just around $12,000, a great value for such a great little car.

Power and Performance: | The 84-horsepower, 1.2-liter four-cylinder Ecotec engine included in most Spark models provides a decidedly old-school economy-car performance. The Spark comes standard with a five-speed manual gearbox, and if you drive aggressively you can hustle it along; a new continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) replaces the former four-speed automatic transmission this year. While we haven't driven this model with the new CVT, we hope it's faster than the former automatic, without too much of the coarse engine drone that afflicts small cars with such a transmission. As for the Spark EV, it's the quickest of the new crop of 'affordable' electric models, with a 0-60 mph time of just 7.6 seconds, and up to 400 pound-feet of torque on tap from its 105-kW electric motor system. It's extremely quiet and responsive, thanks to its 105-kW (140-hp) electric motor. And among electric cars, we've found it more eager than the Leaf, more tossable than the Fit EV,, and better integrated overall than the Smart Electric Drive. Interiors and Special Features: | The 2014 Chevrolet Spark features a simple, modern interior enlivened by color-accented dash and door panels. Hard plastic surfaces are expected in an affordable hatchback, but the Spark has some well-textured trim pieces that impart a subtly classier ambience. Sporty, motorcycle-like gauges add further visual interest, featuring both a traditional speedometer and a digital multifunction display. The available MyLink touchscreen infotainment system adds to the Spark's modern vibe with sharp graphics and intuitive menus. It also boasts strong smartphone app integration, including Internet radio, text message translation, voice commands and available navigation. Still, like a lot of similar systems, it's not compatible with all smartphones, and the screen sometimes fails to register touch inputs, which can be frustrating. The seating is better than you'd expect in such a small car. The upright position of the Spark's front seats fosters the impression that you're sitting on the chairs rather than in them, and there's nothing in the way of lateral support. Still, most adults will find the seats comfortable enough, even on longer drives. While larger than many in the subcompact segment, the rear seats are still better suited to smaller passengers. The low seat cushions and headrests will likely draw complaints from average-sized adults. Behind the rear seats, 11.4 cubic feet of cargo can be crammed into the narrow space. Folding down the rear seats isn't a simple affair, as the seat cushions must be flipped forward and the headrests removed before plopping down the seatbacks. Once that's done, however, you get a fairly flat cargo floor and a more accommodating 31.2 cubes of capacity. For larger items, the 2LT trim provides a functional roof rack. Safety features: | Standard safety features on the 2014 Chevy Spark include four-wheel antilock brakes (front discs, rear drums), hill-hold assist, stability and traction control, front and rear side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and front-seat knee airbags. Six months of OnStar is also standard and includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking, stolen vehicle assistance and turn-by-turn navigation. In government crash tests, the Spark received four stars overall (out of a possible five), with four stars for total frontal impact protection and five stars for total side crash protection. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests, the Spark received the highest possible rating of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal offset, side impact and roof strength tests. In the small-overlap frontal offset test, the Spark scored a second-highest (out of four) "Acceptable" rating. It is the only subcompact thus far tested (out of 11) to earn above a "Poor" (lowest) or "Marginal" (second-lowest) rating in this stringent new test. The Spark's seat/head restraint design was rated "Good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts. In Edmunds brake testing, a Spark 2LT stopped from 60 mph in 123 feet, which is average for this class of car. Originally appeared on Edmunds |
