Negotiate Smarter with the Best Car Buying Tools

The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu is as mild-mannered as any vehicle in the mid-size sedan segment. However, it is also quite modern. Think of it as Clark Kent with a smartphone. When buying a mid-sized sedan, it is more of a practical purchase than an emotional one. With this car, the entire family chimes in and the 2014 Chevy Malibu definitely hits the spot when it comes to the needs and wants of a family. There are several great aspects to this car, keep reading to find out more!

The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu offers some amazing features for anyone looking for a mid-sized sedan. It’s a comfortable ride, gets good fuel economy, and has a lot of interior space. The design of the car is pretty conservative; the car blends in and really is the opposite of ostentatious. We see a lot of the standard Chevrolet design cues like the grille with the bars right across hosting the Chevrolet bowtie at the top and the large, square taillights that have become a signature for the brand.

Underneath, the 2014 Malibu comes with a MacPherson style suspension in the front and in the back you get a 4-link independent suspension. This is a standard setup for a mid-sized sedan but Chevrolet has done a wonderful job at giving this car a really nice, smooth ride.

Under the hood of the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu, the base engine is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder from Chevy’s EcoTec line. It has direct injection that sprays fuel directly into the cylinders. What’s interesting about this specific engine is that it’s not as loud as a lot of other direct-injection engines, there’s no clattering from the cylinders which reduces noise in the cabin.

This engine in the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu puts out 196-horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. It’s a decent sized engine for this kind of a car and gets the job done. What’s great about this engine however, is the fuel economy. The 2014 Malibu clocks in at an estimated 9.4 L/100km in the city and 6.5 L/100km on the highway. Clearly, Chevrolet has focused on making this sedan more efficient than power, and it makes sense.

Other than the 2.5-litre engine, if you’re looking for a little more power you can upgrade to a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with a turbocharger which gets 259-horsepwer and 295 pound-feet of torque. That amount of power is actually more than what a lot of six-cylinder engines offer up these days. However with the extra power you’re going to get hit with lower fuel economy, clocking in at 11.2 L/100km in the city and 7.8 L/100km on the highway.

Once you get inside the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu, you realize what this car is all about. At the top of the stack is a beautiful 7-inch full color touchscreen which comes with a full navigation package. The interface will be very familiar and intuitive to smartphone users because it is completely icon-based. Chevy’s MyLink infotainment system is responsive and works smoothly. There aren’t many complaints for this system as it’s probably one of the better infotainment systems on the market, in our opinion.

The ride inside the 2014 Malibu is easy. It’s gentle yet responsive and is perfect for cruising around the city to pick up your kids and do groceries. The car has a really neat feature where it stops the engine whenever you bring the car to a stop sign or red light to conserve fuel. Now some of these systems aren’t done right and can be rather intrusive. However, with the 2014 Malibu, Chevrolet did a great job at making this feature as smooth as possible.

All together the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu is a great mid-sized sedan that’s perfect for getting you and your family around in a car that’s relatively attractive and easy on the wallet. It’s a simple design with a simple ride but offers a whole lot of value. Other mid-size sedans that are definitely worth a look include the Ford Fusion and Hyundai Sonata.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Malibu drives better than the 2013 Chevy Malibu, and that's unusual. It's only been a year since the sedan was new, but with the competition sporting higher gas mileage and more taut handling, change was needed.

As a result, the Malibu drops the battery-assisted Eco drivetrain entirely, and its base four-cylinder moves into a new generation that's better than both the Eco and the former base four-cylinder. The new unit's a 2.5-liter four, just like before, but it's much more efficient, if not as quiet to wind up. It delivers 196 horsepower--about the same as the Kia Optima or Hyundai Sonata--and teams up with a six-speed automatic. With direct injection and stop/start baked in, this setup has similar acceleration compared to the 2013 model but with more ambient noise generated by the injection system. It's still smoother than the Koreans, and runs out 0-60 mph times in the 8-second range while it delivers fuel efficiency ratings of 9.4/6.5 L/100km--in the same range as those other sedans, the Ford Fusion, and just a couple of miles per gallon lower than the best-in-class Nissan Altima.

The four-cylinder is paired to a six-speed automatic, and it's a savvy piece, with smart kickdowns and smooth upshifts. We do wish Chevy outfitted it with paddle-shift controls, not the dumb lever-mounted click switch that's all but useless at any speed.

The optional engine is a well-worthwhile turbocharged four, with 259 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque, the latter up substantially from 2013. It's also mated to the six-speed automatic, and has a 0-60 mph time of about 6.3 seconds. Straight-line performance is clearly in the right leagues, and the powertrain feels flexible across a wide range of driving scenarios--it's quiet enough in highway cruising, and the automatic's geared to accommodate some sporty driving. The turbo also lacks paddles, a maddening choice for a sedan presuming to be sporty.

Interiors and Special Features:

The Malibu's 5-passenger cabin has an airy, upscale feel in which available leather seating and soft-touch surfaces complement metallic silver trim and chrome accents. For 2014, Chevy has increased rear-passenger kneeroom by redesigning the front seatbacks. The front seats themselves are adequately comfortable, with the driver's seat offering 8-way power adjustability and 4-way power-operated lumbar support. Though appealing in appearance, the placements of chrome accents are not ideal, as they create considerable glare on sunny days. At over 16 cubic feet, trunk space is impressive.

The 2014 Malibu comes in three major trims: LS, LT and LTZ, with the Eco eAssist model within the mid-trim LT grouping. On the least-expensive end, LS models come with features such as 6-speaker audio with AM/FM/CD/satellite radio, cruise control, remote keyless entry, and Bluetooth phone connectivity. Stepping up to LT trims brings a 7-inch touch-screen with MyLink, a USB port for audio devices, Bluetooth audio streaming and a power driver's seat. Top-line LTZ versions enhance comfort with a power passenger seat, heated front seats and leather upholstery. All 2014 Malibus have 10 airbags and a 6-month trial of GM's OnStar safety and communications system with automatic crash response.

Depending on trim level, you can equip Chevy's midsize sedan with navigation, a power sunroof, a backup camera and leather seating. The Advanced Safety Package includes blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, and a rear cross-traffic alert. Those seeking a premium audio system can opt for a 9-speaker Pioneer setup.

Safety features:

The 2014 Chevy Malibu comes standard with antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front knee airbags, front side airbags, rear side airbags and side curtain airbags. Also standard is the OnStar telematics system, which includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking and stolen vehicle assistance. A rearview camera is available, as is a safety package with forward collision warning, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert systems.

In Edmunds brake testing, a Malibu Eco stopped from 60 mph in 119 feet, which is a few feet better than average.

In government crash testing, last year's similar Malibu earned five out of five stars for overall crash protection, with five stars for total frontal impact protection and five stars for total side impact protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Malibu its highest possible rating of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side impact and roof strength tests. It was also rated Good for its seat/head restraint design in rear-impact testing. In the Institute's new small-overlap frontal-offset test, the Malibu scored a second-lowest "Marginal" rating, though in fairness not many cars have done well in this relatively new test.
