Quick Look

The 2014 BMW 528i may be the entry-level vehicle in the 5-Series lineup, but since it delivers top-notch quality in every single area, its “lower” standing shouldn’t really matter to anyone. The most impressive aspect is not surprisingly its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, which can produce 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. As far luxury sedans go, this vehicle deserves a top spot on anybody’s list.

Full Review

The 2014 BMW 528i mixes old features with new ones to deliver a sedan that pays tribute to the cars that came before it and embraces the inevitable future. Its ultimate rival is the Mercedes-Benz E300, which means that to some degree they are both similar in some way. The BMW’s most attractive traits are its design, cabin comfort and abundance of special features. The BMW’s other rivals include Lexus GS350 and Audi A6.

The design the entire 5-Series lineup carries isn’t overly different from the predecessors, but it is bigger, thanks to its longer wheelbase and more robust design. The reason for this “expansion” is the fact that the chassis and body structure of this car were developed in conjunction with BMW’s top lineup known as the 7-Series. So, if you wanted a smaller car, then maybe it would make more sense to “degrade” to a 3-Series BMW. In our eyes, extra space never really hurts, especially since this car features an SUV-sized cargo area – something that many drivers would appreciate.

On the inside, the 2014 528i offers more space than ever before, making good use of the expanded wheel. BMW has put quite a bit of effort into the development of the car’s ergonomics, which means that all the displays, buttons and knobs are located in the most convenient area possible – the centre of the cabin. Interior materials for the most part are top-notch, which reflects the car’s move into a more mature styling direction. The only issue that you might encounter here is the presence of Leatherette seating, which has no place in a luxury car like this one – especially when it costs $54,600.

Under the hood, the new BMW 528i comes with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, which can produce 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Since the 528i model is an entry-level vehicle in the lineup, it’s almost surprising to see such a high-tech engine here. Apart from an awesome power output, you also get very decent fuel economy. Its EPA rating on the highway is 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres. This rating is in fact better than what you’d find in the xDrive (all-wheel-drive) version of the car, which was rated at 8.8 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. The only problem with this engine is the absence of a manual transmission, but its eight-speed automatic is doing well enough too.

Overall, the 2014 BMW 528i is a fun car that offers all the right features in all the right places. It’s an expensive car, but if you’re looking for a fine midsize sedan, there are few alternatives that can match it in terms of quality, design and durability. Definitely give it a look.

Power and Performance:

Go with the base 2014 BMW 528i and you get a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, making 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet. If you don't mind a slightly more agricultural four-cylinder sound in place of the sonorous six, the base 528i does the job well, too—and much more frugally—while feeling considerably stronger in most situations compared to the base, naturally aspirated six that had previously been used in the 528i; its peak torque is reached at just 1,250 rpm, and the excellent eight-speed automatic transmission makes the most of it, responding quickly when needed.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2014 BMW 528i's interior space has grown slightly over the years, while the overall impression has grown almost exponentially. Already a strong suit, BMW paid special attention to ergonomics in the BMW 5 Series for 2014, with all displays, knobs and buttons located in the central portion of the cabin. And the choice of interior materials reflects a new maturity on the part of BMW management; considering this is where consumers spend most of their time, the new upgrades are fully appropriate to that. We'd take issue, however, with the standard-spec Leatherette seating, which has no place in a $50,000 luxury car.

Safety features:

The 2014 BMW 528i comes with 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and six airbags (front, front-side, full-length side curtain). The available BMW Assist Safety Plan adds four years' worth of various emergency roadside services.

In government crash testing, the current 5 Series received a perfect five stars overall, including four stars for frontal impacts and five stars for side impacts. The independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 5 Series its highest rating of Good in all tested categories.
