The 2014 Q7 is offered in three different flavors--each with a different engine and somewhat different performance credentials. All three share quattro all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission, give the buyer a range of choice.

There are no letdowns for performance, no matter which engine you opt for. The 3.0T models get a 280-horsepower, 3.0-liter supercharged V-6; then TDI models get a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6; and at the top of the performance ladder is the S-Line, with its higher-output, 333-hp version of the 3.0-liter supercharged V-6.

Of those, the TDI is our pick, as it returns a solid 12.38 L/100km city driving and 8.4 L/100km on the highway and is just as quick as the base engine (0-60 in 7.7 seconds). It's fun to drive, and just like the entire Q7 lineup, includes Audi's quattro all-wheel drive. Tow ratings up to 6,600 pounds are available with the right equipment, making it easy to tow the boat or jet skis to the lake.

Upgrading to the 333-hp S line version offers improved performance, along with some upgraded equipment and appearance extras. Audi says the S line Q7 is good for a 6.9-second 0-60 mph run. 

Whichever engine you choose, the Audi Q7 is surprisingly nimble for its size, driving more like a car than an SUV. Standard quattro all-wheel drive gives the Q7 good all-weather capability and dependable traction in general. The power steering is well-weighted and confident, with better feedback than you'll find in some sedans.

While there are three different powertrains on offer in the 2014 Audi Q7, we maintain that one stands well above the others—especially if you value fuel economy numbers. No large crossover is going to win a green-car gold medal, but among the three choices, the diesel is the clear winner.

We have nothing against the base 3.0-liter supercharged V-6, making 280 horsepower, and the S line's more sharply-tuned 333-hp version. It's just that the 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel V-6, which was recently reengineered this year, is just about as much fun. Even if you go by the official 0-60 mph numbers (7.7 seconds to 60 mph), it's just as fast as the base engine, while being considerably skimpier on fuel during highway trips. And compared to either of the gasoline engines, it makes towing look effortless.

Interiors and Special Features:

True to recent Audi tradition, the interior is where the 2014 Q7 earns its keep. The leather is supple and elegant, and the Dark Brown Walnut wood trim is a fantastic touch. The power front seats hold the driver just so. The second row provides ample room but things get cramped in the third row. With those back two rows folded flat, there is 72 cubic feet of cargo space inside the Q7. The split-back folding seats yield more combinations (28!) than you'll likely ever need but demonstrate Audi's determination to coax the most out of a platform.

The 2014 Audi Q7 is exceptionally well-equipped. The base 3.0T and TDI turbodiesel models (called Premium trim) feature rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, Audi Multimedia Interface and a power liftgate. The Premium Plus gets additional chrome pieces, a rearview camera, navigation system (standard with Audi Connect), and Bose Surround Sound system. The TDI Prestige package comes with 20-inch wheels and Audi's Warm Weather package. Across the line, quattro AWD, electronic stability control with roll-over mitigation, and the full litany of airbags, including side-curtain airbags that protect across all three rows, are present.

The most notable option for your conventional gasoline-powered 2014 Audi Q7 is the S-Line package. Improving the feel and responsiveness of the 5,400-pound Q7, the S-Line package coaxes 333 horsepower out of the Q7's V6 and includes a 3-panel panorama sunroof and the Warm Weather Package with 4-zone climate control. The Multimedia Navigation unit is available as on option on Premium models. Adaptive air suspension is also available, and will go a long way toward improving your Q7's performance no matter what the surface and conditions.

Safety features:

Standard safety features on the 2014 Audi Q7 include antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and rear parking sensors. A rearview camera is standard on Premium Plus and Prestige trims, while a blind-spot warning system is standard on the Prestige. Second-row side airbags are optional on all trims.

In Edmunds brake testing, the 3.0T came to a stop from 60 mph in 132 feet, which is long for SUVs in this class. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Q7 the highest rating of "Good" in its moderate-overlap frontal-offset and side-impact tests.
