Quick Look

The 2015 Volvo XC70 may look extremely dated, but the new Drive-E four-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic transmission allow it to delay its inevitable demise in the near future. It’s also important to note that this car is actually a station wagon, not a crossover – despite a few cues here and there.

Full Review

The 2015 Volvo XC70 is back for yet another round this year, but at this point, it feels as though this crossover just needs to be put out of its misery. This vehicle is essentially the last reminder of what Volvos used to be – boxy, rigid, square-tailed and spacious station wagons. So, even though it may appear to be a crossover, at its heart it’s still a wagon – and an ugly one at that. The one thing that allows it to live on is a new and far more fuel-efficient Drive-E four-cylinder engine that also happens to benefit from an eight-speed automatic transmission.

In terms of exterior design, the Volvo XC70 is essentially a beefed-up station wagon. It offers 8.3 inches of ground clearance for rougher terrains, as well as front and rear skidplates, protective side moldings and a standard roof rack. It really does seem like a crossover in many respects, which is why it’s all the more disappointing that it still has the rectangular profile and huge windows of a station wagon. In case we didn’t make it clear yet – this thing looks dated.

On the inside, the XC70 easily fit in five passengers, thanks to its spacious and comfortable seats. The driver’s seat is particularly impressive thanks to its excellent level of support and superb outward visibility – though we do feel that the centre armrest could be higher.  The back seats are spacious as well, being able to fit three adults – though we recommend sticking to only two on longer trips. The rear seats can fold in 40/20/40 split, but even without that, you get 33 cubic feet of cargo space. The overall quality of materials and design is quite decent too, especially in higher trim levels, making it seem almost like a luxury car. You will find plush leather seating and walnut inlays, along with slick and easy-to-use buttons and gauges. Speaking of tech features, we particularly enjoyed the highly-intuitive, human-shaped climate controls. For instance, if you press on the “head,” that’s where the air will blow.

Under the hood, the new Volvo XC70 has three different engine configurations. The base T5 Drive-E features a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 240 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while being connected an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel-drive system. The engine also utilises start/stop technology, which turns off the engine when at idle. The next engine is a 3.2-litre six-cylinder, which provides 240 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, which you will find in the T6 model. The most powerful engine is the turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder that pumps out 300 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. Both six-cylinder engines are combined with an all-wheel-drive system and six-speed automatic transmission. Every XC70 can tow up to 3,300 pounds.

Overall, it’s tough to recommend the 2015 Volvo XC70 to everyone. It does have its charms, particularly when it comes to powertrains, but it’s also surprisingly outdated. If you can get past its looks, you might like what this wagon has to offer. Otherwise, we would suggest searching for a different vehicle.

Power and Performance:

An all-new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is the standard engine for the 2015 XC70 T5 Drive-E. It develops 240 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It comes with an equally new eight-speed automatic. This powertrain drives the front wheels and is good for 27 mpg combined (24 city/31 highway). Contributing to that impressive efficiency is an automatic engine stop-start system (it shuts off the engine while the vehicle is stopped to save gas) that is standard with this engine.

The XC70 3.2 comes with a 3.2-liter inline-6 that produces 240 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard. Volvo says the XC70 3.2 will sprint to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds, which is a slow time compared with that of most compact luxury crossovers. EPA-estimated fuel economy is considerably worse, though: 21 mpg combined (18 city/25 highway).

Interiors and Special Features:

The 5-passenger Volvo XC70, especially in its higher trim levels, can pass as a luxury car with its plush leather seating and walnut inlays. Buttons and gauges are sleek and mostly easy to identify and use, none more so than the human-shaped climate controls – press the "head" to direct ventilation that way, for example. The driving position is good (though some craved a higher center armrest on long drives). The driver's seat itself is way above par, and outward visibility is excellent. Rear-seat room is spacious and the seats fold in 40/20/40 split. With the seats up, cargo space is plentiful at 33 cubic feet – enough for several weeks of groceries.

Safety features:

Once the bellwether for automotive safety innovation, Volvo is now matched or surpassed in that regard by many of its rivals. Nevertheless, the 2015 XC70 returns with standard antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, front and rear head airbags, front head restraint whiplash protection and front side-mounted airbags. Of course, LED daytime running lights also remain standard, as do turn-signal-integrated mirrors and a remote antitheft alarm. The optional Technology Package, meantime, throws adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, lane-departure warnings, pedestrian detection and active high beams into the mix.
