Quick Look

The 2015 Volkswagen Beetle Coupe is an excellent follow-up to the 2014 model, borrowing most of its design, features and powertrains from those vehicles. That said, this Volkswagen comes with an all-new 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder TDI engine, which can pump out 150 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, while delivering superb fuel economy. So, those who have enjoyed the previous Beetle vehicle will definitely find much to love here.

Full Review

The 2015 Volkswagen Beetle Coupe is just as gender-neutral as previous iterations. In other words, it’s not as “cutesy” or “adorable” as the now iconic 1960s version of the vehicle. Instead it’s much leaner and meaner, offering a set of powerful engines to choose from and four seats. Just like before there are two variants of the vehicle – the hardtop coupe and soft-top convertible. The coupe is usually the more preferred version and the one we will discuss in more detail here.

Like its 2014 sibling, the new Beetle Coupe looks is even more aggressive-looking on the outside than before. For the longest time, the Beetle has been known as a vehicle for women, but this one sports more gender-neutral features. In other words, it has fewer curves, a lower and flatter roofline as well as a vertical windshield. It does retain four-person seating, with convertible variant being available as well. The coupe also comes with a large number of external features. The Beetle 2.5L model offers 17-inch alloy wheels, heated windshield, washer nozzles and heated mirrors. The Beetle R-Line comes with 18-inch wheels, foglights and a rear spoiler.

The cabin features aluminum and carbon fiber trim and more space in the back along with extremely comfortable seats. In terms features, you’ll find a new telescopic leather steering wheel as well as a 7.7-inch touchscreen mounted on the centre console. It also comes with an ultra-modern infotainment system. The design is minimalistic – as is typical of Volkswagen – so you won’t be fiddling with any of the controls too much. Everything is located where it’s supposed to be and operates the way it should.

On the powertrain side of things, you get a selection of three engines. The base engine is a 2.5-liter five-cylinder, which can produce 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. It can be combined either with a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Next up is the 1.8-litre four-cylinder turbo engine, which can give you 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque of torque, while being match to a five-speed automatic. Finally, there’s also a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, which yields 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. This one can channel its power either through a six-speed manual or DSG gearbox. The fuel economy is actually better than last year, which is good. In terms of handling, the car is nimble and responsive – but that’s not a surprise, given that we’re talking about a Beetle here.

The 2014 Volkswagen Beetle Coupe isn’t for everyone, but it keeps its iconic look, while reaching out to a broader audience. You definitely get your money’s worth with this one, so definitely check it out – Volkswagen rarely disappoints.

Power and Performance:

The TDI version of the 2015 Volkswagen Beetle Coupe will come with turbodiesel powerplant, which is one of the most interesting additions this year. Touted as more fuel efficient and with 10 more ponies than the outgoing EA211 turbodiesel, the new EA288 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) TDI engine is slated to put out 150 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque under the auspices of a standard 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission. Average fuel efficiency numbers are unavailable as yet, but a cleaner burning catalytic converter should lead to greener driving. And as a bonus, a realignment of the exhaust manifold is anticipated to quicken the traditionally lazy cabin heat common to cold-weather diesel performance.
