Quick Look

The 2015 Volkswagen CC sacrifices some function for style, but that’s a consequence of its “four-door-coupe” look. As a result, it’s not always a comfortable vehicle, but it does look good – on the inside and outside. The best part about this luxury sedan-alike is its price point, which is just below $40,000.

Full Review

The 2015 Volkswagen CC is the German automaker’s attempt to combine the slick styling of a coupe with the practicality of a sedan. It’s classified as a coupe, but since it’s inspired by the Mercedes-Benz CLS, which has kicked off a whole new generation of coupes, this vehicle delivers easier access to the rear seats thanks to its four doors. It’s also more luxurious than the similar-looking Passat, though we would say it’s still relatively affordable, with a price just below $40,000.

The 2015 CC sports a low, wide stance with sloping rear glass, giving it a decidedly coupe-like appearance – our reason why Volkswagen has called it a “four-door coupe” as opposed to a “sedan.” The best way of looking at the CC is as the more stylish version of the Volkswagen Passat mid-size sedan, which is no longer a stand-out in its segment due to its conservative nature. In 2013, Volkswagen gave the CC a mid-cycle refresh that kept the vehicle’s distinct profile, but changed the front and back ends by adding LED lighting and several other upscale features.

On the inside, the new Volkswagen CC has all the basic features you’d expect from a relatively affordable sedan, such as air conditioning, cruise control, power front seats and so on. However, if you want to experience the CC’s luxury, then we recommend trying some of its higher trims, which deliver the kind of features and items you’d expect from a true luxury car. You can get ventilated front seats with massage, front and rear parking sensors, premium sound, a power rear sunshade among other high-end offerings.

In terms of comfort, however, the CC makes a few sacrifices – mainly when it comes to size. Don’t get us wrong – the space is superbly refined and luxurious, but looks aren’t everything. While it’s easier to get in and out of the rear seat compared to other coupes, it’s not quite as easy as in a regular sedan. That being said, if you don’t intend to carry adults in the backseat, then the CC’s fashion-forwardness should not be a real issue. Rear headroom is a bit tight, especially in the rear, while the driving position will either please or annoy you since the seat is close to the floor and has large side bolsters that scoop you in a little, making you feel like you are inside a spoon.

Under the hood, the 2015 CC has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that can produce 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. You can combine it either with a standard six-speed manual or optional dual-clutch automatic DSG transmission. The higher trim levels feature a 3.6-litre gasoline VR6 engine that serves up 300 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. It’s connected exclusively to a six-speed single-clutch transmission. Both engines offer their own bags of tricks, but if you have the extra cash, the VR6 is definitely the better option.

Overall, the 2015 Volkswagen CC is a decent sedan-alike for those seeking a good-looking vehicle with decent performance. It does lack space and comfort, but if you’re willing to accept that, then you’ll love this coupe. Basically, what we’re saying is examine the car carefully before buying and figure out if it’s really for you.

Power and Performance:

We favor the CC's base engine, a 200-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (2.0T). Models equipped with it are lighter and feel it, with better dynamic responses than their top-of-the-line VR6 4Motion counterpart. Even in spirited driving, the four develops plenty of low- and mid-range torque with only a slight delay in turbo boost just off idle, while the narrow-angle six-cylinder is more powerful but seems to take a moment more to build steam.

With the help of direct injection and turbocharging, the four makes 200 hp and 207 pound-feet of torque. The small, responsive turbo makes it feel like a larger engine, and the optional DSG dual-clutch automatic helps make the most of engine output with clap-quick shifts. The DSG has a manual shift function as well as a sport mode for quicker reactions at the expense of some smoothness. A six-speed manual is standard on the CC Sport for those who prefer a third pedal.

Interiors and Special Features:

With the CC's coupe-like appearance and dimensions come a few coupe-like compromises. There's less space inside, the rear seat is difficult to get in and out of compared to a more upright four-door, and the driving position is lower than some folks used to sedans might like.

Realistically, though, unless you frequently carry taller adults in the backseat, the CC's fashion-forward nature doesn't become a big problem. We see the CC working best for those who plan to carry a child or two in back, or who generally drive alone, with the back seat adding more flexibility than a two-door would.

Safety features:

All CC models come equipped with a bevy of safety features including dual front, side and side curtain airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems.
