Quick Look

The 2015 Chevrolet Cruze manages to deliver a roomy cabin, quiet ride and even a few luxury features. What’s especially noteworthy is the fact that the compact sedan’s OnStar system now allows the car to act as a Wi-Fi hotspot, while its standard seven-inch touchscreen display has even more USB ports, making it more appealing to the younger generation.

Full Review

The 2015 Chevrolet Cruze is one of the “less attractive” models in the lineup since it’s slated for a major upgrade next year. However, this hardly means anything when it comes to compact sedan segment as a whole. In the area, the Cruze is still a top performer, with its spacious cabin, quiet ride and even a bit of mid-size luxury, if you go for the top trim level. The 2015 model also boasts a few practical updates to the infotainment and connectivity.

Despite the minimal amount of changes overall, Chevrolet has altered the 2015 Cruze enough to seem “smarter looking” – though those changes are certainly not big. You get several additional colours, more brightwork at the front and nicely-detailed new headlights. The overall profile is otherwise the same as that of its predecessor, which has been around since 2011. In terms of looks, the Cruze is basically a slightly smaller version of the Malibu, which was a mid-size sedan that got kicked out of the market due to a lack of rear seating room. Additionally, the Cruze’s beltline is lower and less upswept than the Malibu’s, which allows for better outward visibility.

On the inside, the Chevrolet Cruze doesn’t sport any big changes either. However, you will spot a few updates when it comes to its tech features. The biggest changes pertain to the infotainment system, which can now alert the driver to text messages and reads them over Bluetooth. If you have iPhone iOS 6 or 7, you will also be able to benefit from Siri Eyes Free voice controls. Additionally, 4G LTE connection from OnStar can turn the car into a Wi-Fi hotspot. Finally, the vehicle’s standard seven-inch touchscreen now has more USB ports, making it even more appealing the younger generation than before.

Under the hood, the 2015 Cruze has a 1.8-litre inline-four engine that generates 138 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. It’s not particularly fast, but it’s not bad overall. On top of the LS, LT, RS and LTZ models, the Cruze will also get a Cruze Eco with a fuel economy rating of 5.6 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway and a Cruze Diesel with a rating of 5.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. The top-level engine in the Cruze is a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four, which can yield 151 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of torque, beating Volkswagen’s efficient Jetta TDI.

The moral of the story is that the 2015 Chevrolet Cruze is an excellent compact sedan. It has a nice cabin, plenty of tech options and solid exterior design. Definitely give it a look.

Power and Performance:

The Chevrolet Cruze has changed in a few subtle areas for 2015, but its performance should be exactly the same—meaning that providing an especially sporty driving experience isn't one of this car's strengths.

What you will find in the 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that comes in most LT and all LTZ models is smooth, refined, and quite fuel-efficient motoring. By far it's the better choice for gasoline models. It can be paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, but most buyers will opt for the six-speed automatic. The 1.8-liter four is the cheaper base engine, but it's definitely not our preference as it's noisy and coarse when pressed.

Interiors and Special Features:

No earth-shattering changes on the interior either. But there are some noticeable upgrades, too, specifically the new tech goodies that makes the Cruze that much more functionally versatile than ever before. The infotainment system may be getting the biggest update of the whole car. The system now alerts driver’s to text messages and reads them over Bluetooth, and iPhone iOS 6 and 7 users benefit from Siri Eyes Free voice controls.

Likewise, a 4G LTE connection from OnStar now allows the car to act as its own Wi-Fi hotspot, an all-too important characteristic if the Cruze wants to be more attractive to younger and social-media conscious buyers. Finally, the Cruze’s standard seven-inch touchscreen display now comes with more USB ports.

Outside of all the tech upgrades, the interior of the 2015 Cruze also received reshaped cupholders and a simple reconfiguring of buttons that now has the trunk release on the center console with the door lock controls on the doors, instead of the console where they used to be.

Safety features:

The Cruze has done very well in crash-test safety ratings from both the federal government and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Factor in excellent crash ratings and the electronic safety systems on offer, and the Cruze offers safety that was exclusive to luxury-brand cars just a few years ago.

The ten standard airbags—frontal, head-curtain, thorax side bags front and back, and knee bags—are supplemented by stability control and even a collapsible pedal assembly system. All Cruze models contain OnStar with Automatic Crash Response, which automatically notifies OnStar and first responders--such as a 911 operator--that a crash has taken place, along with some information the chance of severe injury. An Enhanced Safety Package was new last year; it adds Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and rear park assist—all advanced accident-avoidance features limited to luxury-brand vehicles just a few years ago..
