Quick Look

The 2015 Chevrolet Camaro continues the long-running tradition of blowing away teen drivers with powerful engines and edgy looks. It may not be the most appealing car in today’s age of fuel efficiency and minimalism, but car enthusiasts should still find much to love here. Its 6.2-litre V8 engine can pump out the impressive 580 horsepower and 556 pound-feet of torque, which is quite impressive, even if it does so at the expense of decent fuel economy.

Full Review

Ever since 1966, the Camaro has continued to enthrall scores of teenagers across North America with its powerful engine and somewhat cartoonish looks. The 2015 Chevrolet Camaro doesn’t stray from that reputation, offering a mean powertrain, oddly appealing body design and a feature-rich cabin. The drawback? Aside from a complete disregard for fuel economy – although it’s actually not bad – there’s really very little to complain about. The Chevy Camaro has impressed us all yet again.

In terms of exterior design, very little has changed for 2015 release since 2014. Up front, you get the slightly tilted headlamps and sharp, arrow-shaped grille, with the hood leaning a bit more over the car’s nose. The 2014 upgrade has also brought about a larger intake below, while the fog lamps have had their circular surrounds replaced with rectangular ones. Meanwhile, at the back, the new fascia comes with new-style exhaust pipes and a reshaped decklid spoiler. The most important modification involves the LED taillights, which are now one-piece units.

The interior design of the new Camaro is simple yet functional, as expected, but it’s not the best. You’ll find plenty of cheap plastics and boring design overall. The space is a little cramped too due to the car’s low-slung roof that restricts headroom for taller drivers and passengers. The back seats are especially awful because of their size – but mostly for adults.

In terms features, this muscle car fares a bit better. Some of the more high-end features include power heated front seats, rear parking sensors, rearview camera, a seven-inch touchscreen with MyLink, head-up display, leather and a nine-speaker Boston Acoustics stereo.  The more lower-end features are six-speaker stereo with OnStar and satellite radio, air conditioning and power recline for the front seats.

Under the hood, the new Camaro comes with a 3.6-litre V6 that generates 323 horsepower, with fuel economy of 9.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. There’s also a 6.2-liter V8 powertrain, which comes in two flavours in the SS trim. The less powerful configuration can pump out 400 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque, while the more powerful engine can yield the impressive 426 horsepower and 420 pound-feet. The 400-horsepower unit is combined with the automatic transmission, while the 426-horsepower V8 comes only with the manual transmission. And for the record, all 2015 Camaro models can be equipped with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission (which has TapShift). Manual transmissions are an Aisin AY6, which you’ll find on the base model, and a Tremec TR 6060 that’s available on the SS.

All-in-all, the 2015 Chevrolet Camaro is almost exactly the kind of car you’d expect it to be. However, it could be better, especially if take into account its drab interior. Otherwise, it’s all about performance and looks, which is fine too.

Power and Performance:

The base 2015 Chevrolet Camaro carries a 3.6-liter V-6 that generates 323 horsepower and returns 30 mpg on the highway. More ponies are available from the 6.2-liter, V-8 mill that comes in two flavors in the SS. The milder configuration delivers 400 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque, while the brawnier plant generates 426 horsepower and 420 pound-feet. The 400-horsepower unit mates to the automatic transmission, while the 426-pony V-8 combines only with the manual transmission.

All 2015 Camaro models can be equipped with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission with TapShift. Manual choices include an Aisin AY6, which is standard on the base model, and a Tremec TR 6060 that comes with the SS.

Interiors and Special Features:

The interior updates list for the 2015 model year is short, including new Recaro front bucket seats for the SS and ZL1 coupe models, a color heads-up display and a color driver information center. The latter two are standard on the 2LT, 2SS and ZL1 models, and are buyer options on the remaining trim levels. Lastly, a new, optional accent trim package will add a dash of blue to the cabin.

Customers also get six-way adjustable seats with leather trimming included in the 2LT and 2SS bundles, a standard driver’s foot rest, power windows and a three-spoke, leather wrapped steering wheel.

Complementing the updated MyLink infotainment system is a standard six-speaker sound system, but buyers can opt for a Boston Acoustic nine-speaker unit. The latter audio system is standard on the 2LT and 2SS trims.

As far as interior colors go, customers can dress the cabin in Black, Beige, Gray and Inferno Orange, or Blue, with most of them including contrast stitching on the steering wheel, center console and the seats. Additionally, the SS models receive "SS" embroidery on the Recaro seats’ headrests.

Safety features:

Five stars were given to the new Camaro in the front, side and rollover crash tests, the same ratings as the car received in 2014. For the 2015 model year, the Camaro received a slight revamp which includes new looks and revised packaging.

The 2015 Camaro Coupe has six standard airbags, including side curtain airbags. Convertible models only get four standard airbags.

One of the large complaints with the Camaro is sightlines, so Chevy includes a rearview camera as standard equipment on the 2LT and 2SS trim levels. Customers who order the 1LT or 1SS can get it as an option.
