Quick Look

The 2015 Buick Encore may not be the most powerful crossover SUV, but it may be one of the more comfortable, spacious and affordable ones. However, the best aspect of this three-row SUV is the fact that it costs less than $30,000, which gives it a slight edge over other vehicles in this segment.

Full Review

The 2015 Buick Encore is one of those rare crossover SUVs that manage to deliver everything a family needs, but for a very reasonable price. It provides you with comfort, cargo space and fuel economy, while looking relatively attractive. It’s not a luxury vehicle by any means, but it can get you from point A to point B easily.

The 2015 Enclave is over 500 cm long, which makes it a large SUV. In terms of exterior design, it serves up smooth lines and handsome overall appearance, but its hump-like backside may not be enjoyed by everyone. We do like the Encore’s “waterfall” grille along with its square-ish exhaust outlets at the back. You’ll also find standard roof-mounted luggage racks and an optional power moonroof with fixed sunlight for rear passengers. Our favourite feature is the standard power-operated liftgate, which can definitely come in handy in many situations.

On the inside, the new Enclave offers a neat front panel with stylized instrumentation and impressive use of the IntelliLink touchscreen display. The latter has a nice balance of hard buttons and touch-based controls – though the latter can be a little over-sensitive, particularly when you are driving. As we already mentioned, the SUV can seat seven passengers, but an eight-passenger setup is available in the two higher trims. With the seven-seat version you get two captain’s chairs in the second row, while the eight-speed variant gets a bench. However, no matter which seating arrangement you opt for, there’s plenty of room across all seating rows. You can even cram adults in the third row. Cargo space sits at 18.8 cubic feet, but if you fold the back seats, you can get 50 cubic feet.

Under the hood, the new Buick Enclave has a very decent 3.6-litre V6 engine that can produce 288 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. It’s connected to a six-speed automatic transmission, while being available either in front- or all-wheel-drive form. The combined fuel economy on the former is 9.8 litres per 100 kilometres, while on latter, it’s at 10.7 litres per 100 kilometres. Those numbers are decent overall, especially for the vehicle’s asking price, but there are better alternatives out there. For instance, the Acura MDX is rated at 8.4 litres per 100 kilometres for front-wheel drive and 8.7 litres per 100 kilometres for all-wheel drive. The Enclave’s towing capacity is also not particularly competitive, being able to tow up to 4,500 pounds only. Its Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia siblings are rated at 5,200 pounds in this regard, which puts Buick slightly behind.  The best part of the Enclave is that it can run regular unleaded fuel, unlike some of its more luxurious competitors, which prefer premium gasoline.

The 2015 Buick Enclave is a good option for those who don’t want to spend a few extra thousand on a brand-new SUV. This vehicle delivers optimum interior comfort, plenty of space and decent looks for less than $30,000, which makes it worth checking out. However, if money is no object to you, then we would definitely recommend looking at the Enclave’s higher-priced competitors, such as the Acura MDX, Infiniti QX60 or Audi Q7.

Puissance et performance:

The 2015 Buick Encore has good steering and holds the road better than you'd expect for such a short vehicle. However, it's lacking in power, so it's hard to really take advantage of the Encore's surprisingly good chassis.

You can do zero to 60 mph in about 9 seconds in the lightest, front-wheel-drive Encore. That goes up to 10 seconds if you add all-wheel drive, though the 150 pounds you add seems to improve the ride as well as adding traction. That AWD system is tuned to send power to the rear wheels on every launch, shifting the power increasingly to the front if there's traction up to 37 mph--by which time the Encore is being propelled only by the front wheels. Even if it's not really needed much, we suspect the AWD system will be a popular fitting in the Northeast and anywhere there's snow to be found.

Caractéristiques spéciales et intérieures:

Step into the 2015 Buick Enclave and you'll see a handsome front panel with stylized instrument faces and clean integration of the IntelliLink touch-screen display. The display blends hard buttons and touch-based controls, the latter of which can be – if you'll excuse the pun – too touchy, especially when you're driving at freeway speeds. Seven-passenger seating is standard across the line, with an 8-passenger setup an option in the two higher trims. The former has two captain's chairs in the second row, while the latter uses a bench. Legroom is generous even in the third row, as is rear cargo space.
