Quick Look

The 2015 Acura RLX is back for a second round, delivering solid performance and nifty interior features. For a flagship sedan, it’s not exactly flashy, but it’s still a very decent vehicle, especially if you consider the hybrid version, which combines a V6 engine with three electric motors to provide an impressive power output, but not at the expense of fuel economy.

Full Review

The 2015 Acura RLX the second iteration of the luxury brand’s flagship sedan, which was introduced for 2014 as a replacement for the RL lineup. As such, it’s a very similar vehicle in many ways, offering subtle design and no gimmicks on the inside. Though its main competitors are the Cadillac XTS and Lincoln MKS, it’s not nearly as attractive or brilliant in any of its facets. That said, the vehicle does offer several neat features and solid performance.

Outside, the 2015 RLX is admittedly a bit plain in terms of design, which is a shame, considering that this is a luxury vehicle. And we don’t mean “understated” either, like in the case of Volvo cars. For the lack of a better word, it’s just boring. It does offer tasteful body sculpting along the sides, along with neat headlights at the front, which house an impressive 10 LED lighting elements for improved visibility. The RLX is almost two inches wider than the RL model, which allows for a slightly more spacious cabin, but its length is exactly the same.

The five-passenger cabin of the 2015 RLX easily live up to its luxury pedigree in terms of size and quality. You get a slick dual-screen information system in the centre dash with important little touches like a power-operated steering-wheel adjustment and large control knob. In terms of space – there’s a lot of it, particularly at the front, but that’s rarely a surprise. At the back, passengers will get 38.8 inches of legroom, which is quite a bit for a sedan. The trunk delivers 15 cubic feet of space, which is enough for most tasks. The more annoying features mainly involve the unresponsive touchscreen functions – like the ones for fan speed and air flow; those would have worked much better with real buttons. If you are getting the hybrid version of the RLX, you will get a gear lever that replaces a series of buttons in the regular version.

Under the hood, the RLX can be had in a variety of different configurations. The gasoline-powered model comes with a 3.5-litre V6 engine that produces 310 horsepower and 372 pound-feet of torque. The standard models are all front-wheel-drive and equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD, on the other hand, is all-wheel drive, with the letters standing for Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. It offers the same V6 engine, but with three motors connected to it. Two of the motors replace a traditional driveshaft and differential to power the rear wheels, while the other one drives engine torque to the front wheels and feeds a lithium-ion battery pack with regenerative braking energy. This powertrain produces 377 horsepower and 341 pound-feet of torque, while being connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The fuel economy numbers are very impressive too: 8.4 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway.

Overall, the 2015 Acura RLX is a good vehicle, but only as long as you can overlook its dull appearance. So, if you don’t feel like showing off and instead want solid performance and a comfortable cabin, then you should give the RLX a look.

Puissance et performance:

Unlike many of its competitors, the RLX doesn't take a high-horsepower approach to performance. Instead, it tries to use unique technological solutions to differentiate itself.

Even among the milder versions of the other sedans in its class, the Acura RLX's 310-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 isn't a spec-page leader, nor is its 272 pound-feet of torque. It's up 10 hp and 1 lb-ft over the RL's 3.7-liter V-6, but it pales next to the Lincoln MKS EcoBoost's 365 horsepower, or the Hyundai Genesis R-Spec's 429 hp.

Caractéristiques spéciales et intérieures:

The 2015 RLX's 5-passenger cabin easily lives up to luxury-car standards thanks to quality materials, a slick dual-screen information system in the center dash and thoughtful touches such as power-operated steering-wheel adjustment. The RLX is also roomy. Rear-seat passengers are treated to a copious 38.8 inches of legroom. Even with that stretch-out room, trunk capacity is still roughly 15 cubic feet, ample for most duties. Detractors include touch-based controls of functions such as fan speed and air flow, which would be easier to use with traditional buttons or switches. Hybrid RLX models substitute the gear lever for a series of buttons.

Caractéristiques de sécurité:

Standard safety features on the 2015 Acura RLX include antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front seat side-impact airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and a driver side knee airbag.

A rearview camera is standard, but you have to spring for the Advance option package to get front and rear parking sensors. That package also includes lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist and a frontal collision warning and mitigation system with automatic braking. A blind-spot monitoring system is included on models equipped with the Technology and higher option packages.
