The 2014 Volvo XC60 is yet another well-put-together SUV from Volvo, coming with a range of safety features, a beautiful profile and three powerful engines. The 3.0-litre inline-six engine is particularly impressive, being able to produce 325 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque.

The 2014 Volvo XC60 is every bit as stylish, safety-conscious and spacious as its predecessors – except that now it’s even better. Introduced in 2010, this SUV has become one of the most recognized cars in the U.S.A. and Canada, which means that it must be quite a task to keep it that way one year after another. Volvo has introduced a few changes here and there to make it even more appealing.

In fact, as soon as you set your eyes on its graceful yet functional profile, you’re bound to get mesmerized. Thanks to its curvy shape, this SUV is nothing like Volvo’s older boxy cars, which would look far too outdated by today’s standards. But if there’s one problem with the exterior, it would be the ironmark badge on its grille, which makes the front seem more in-your-face than it should be. Ultimately, this is just minor nitpick – since this car looks better than most, including even such gems as the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.

Some of the useful external features include roof rails, which reduce wind noise, and a crossbar system, which you can attach to transport bikes, skis, kayaks and so on. Additionally, the R-Design models come with slick 20-inch wheels, but those tend to reduce the car’s off-road capabilities. So, if off-roading is your thing, we recommend going with either the base 3.2 or T6 trim.

On the inside, the new Volvo XC60 is as stylish and minimalist as any other Swedish luxury car. Its dash contains a TFT adaptable digital instrument cluster, which can be used to pick different settings, colours and so on. There’s also Volvo’s undeniably clever-looking ventilation control that looks like a person sitting down. So, when you want to direct ait at your head and shoulder, just press the “head” button or the “legs” to target your feet. We wholeheartedly wish more cars had a control layout as easy to grasp as this one. Design-wise, you’ll find contrasting colours across all the seats and door panels.

It terms of space, this SUV is admittedly small, being only a five-seater, but the seats that are already there are very accommodating. The tall roofline allows for quite a bit of headroom, while the seat adjustability allows you to get as comfortable as you wish. If there’s one problem with the space, it would the tight amount of legroom in the second row, which makes the back seats more suitable for children. The XC60 makes up for this little “problem” with a hefty cargo area, which is as big as 30 cubic feet – with rear seatbacks up. Flatten those, and you get to double that space.

Under the hood, the 2014 XC60 comes with a selection of three different engines. The weakest of them all is the 3.2-litre inline-six, which can produce 240 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. If you’re looking for a bit more power, you can settle for an R-Design model, which comes with a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six. This one can pump out 325 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. It’s powerful, practical and competitive, putting up a fierce fight against the engines you’d find in similar SUVs, like the Acura RDX. The other engine on the roster a slightly less powerful turbocharged inline-six, which can produce 300 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. The trade-off in fuel economy is not bad when it comes to the stronger engines, so if that’s your main concern, then ignore the 3.2-litre engine and go straight for the good stuff.

One of the strongest aspects of the new Volvo XC60 is an excellent set of safety features. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has once again named it its Top Safety+, which means that scored perfectly in almost every test. Some of features you may find onboard include Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Driver Alert Control, Distance Alert and Blind Spot Information System. There’s also the option of adding pedestrian detection with full auto-brake feature, which would allow the car to stop automatically if there’s a person on the road ahead.

Overall, the 2014 Volvo XC60 is an excellent package that offers everything a driver needs and more. If you’re in need of an SUV and you can afford to spend $39,950 on one, then definitely give this car a try.

Puissance et performance:

The 2014 Volvo XC60 3.2 comes with a 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive are standard. All-wheel drive is optional. Volvo estimates that the 3.2 takes 9.1 seconds to go from zero to 60 mph, which is quite slow for this segment. EPA-estimated fuel economy is also underwhelming at 21 mpg combined (18 mpg city/26 mpg highway) with front-drive and 20 combined (18 city/25 highway) with all-wheel drive.

The T6 gets a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 good for 300 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive are standard. In Edmunds testing, a T6 hit 60 mph in 7 seconds, which is average for the class. EPA fuel economy is 20 mpg combined (17 city/24 highway).

The T6 R-Design gets a more powerful version of this engine good for 325 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive are also standard. In Edmunds testing, the R-Design hit 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, making it one of the quicker vehicles in its segment. Volvo says the R-Design's fuel economy is identical to the regular T6.

Caractéristiques spéciales et intérieures:

As befitting a Swedish automobile, the XC60's interior is sleek and understated. A new dash layout includes an available TFT adaptable digital instrument cluster that allows the driver to select different settings and colors. Still onboard is Volvo's clever ventilation control in the shape of a person sitting down. To direct air to your upper body, just hit the figure's "head;" touch the legs, and air moves to the foot-wells. Contrasting colors adorn seats and door panels, and the bucket-style front seats are very comfortable. On the downside, the manual lumbar controls are awkwardly placed and hard to operate.

Caractéristiques de sécurité:

Volvo's City Safety system in the XC60 serves to help stop the vehicle or reduce crash severity in approaching other vehicles. And with the optional pedestrian detection with full auto-brake feature (part of the Technology Package), it can identify an object or person in the road ahead, also bringing the vehicle to a complete stop or reducing the severity of the impact.

Those features are just one of a large roster of active safety systems offered in the XC60. Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Driver Alert Control, Distance Alert, and the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) all are likely to reduce the chances of an accident and are supplemental to now-typical safeguards like electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, side and side-curtain airbags.

The XC60 has earned five stars overall from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and it earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating again for the 2014 model year. Were it not for the four-star score in the rollover resistance test, it would be a perfect performer.
