Quick Look

The 2014 Smart fortwo looks and feels old because this little car hasn’t changed much since the 1990s. As such, it does not come with the modern features and conveniences most other vehicles take for granted these days, making it a somewhat subpar offering in general. What’s worse is that its electric magneto motor can only pump out 74 horsepower and 96 pound-feet of torque, which is weak – though it does deliver magnificent fuel economy numbers.

Full Review

The 2014 Smart fortwo may be an easy car to park due to its toy-car size, but its poor performance and low comfort level hold it back from being one of the better vehicles on the market. The worst part is that its design hasn’t changed one bit since the 1990s, which means that it’s long overdue for a replacement, which, rumour has it, we might get with the 2016 model year. In other words, don’t expect this car to feel “modern” because it does not.

The Smart fortwo is a tall vehicle for its length, with the doors taking up the majority of its sides, featuring a long wheelbase in relation to the car's actual length. It comes with body panels made from dent-resistant plastic, which is perfect for “close-quarters” encounters with other vehicles in the city. The fortwo coupe offers two types of roofs – your typical solid one or a see-through version made from polycarbonate. Meanwhile, the cabriolet variants come with an automatic soft-top, which can be opened at any speed, with removable roof side bars making the experience even more open.

Though the fortwo is tiny on the outside, its interior is more spacious than it seems. The tall roof allows for plenty of headroom and legroom for two passengers. Meanwhile, the “detached” dash design gives the cabin a sense of roominess. That said, the Smart's cargo area is quite a bit smaller than that of a regular subcompact, but you can fit in one or two grocery bags if you want to. You can also fold the passenger seat flat to put in more additional items. Overall, however, the interior isn’t as practical as many other vehicles since it can only fit two people and very few items. It was definitely designed for people who already own a larger vehicle to accommodate their other needs, such as grocery shopping and long road trips.

Under its little hood, the 2014 fortwo has a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder Mitsubishi engine that can produce 70 horsepower and 68 pound-feet of torque. It sits in the back of the Smart and, unlike most other small cars, it powers the rear wheels. The only transmission on offer is a very unrefined five-speed automated manual, which works decently, but it’s far from the best. Highway fuel economy on this engine is rated at 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres, which is just okay since we expect much better from such a small and weak car. The all-electric version relies on a 55-kilowatt motor powered by lithium-ion batteries, and has a fuel efficiency rating of 2.3 litres per 100 kilometres in the city – which is a much better number. Definitely go for the electric model, if you want the best possible version of the fortwo.

In the end, the 2014 Smart fortwo is a car that’s meant for a very select group of individuals. It’s just not practical enough to accommodate any needs. If you already have a decently-sized car and you’re absolutely horrendous at parking, then give this one a look. Otherwise, stay away!

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Smart ForTwo comes in two distinct personalities: gasoline and electric. Sadly, the electric model--which arrived last year--is what the Smart always should have been, but it's almost twice the price of the base gasoline version.

The gasoline Smart ForTwo is powered by a 70-horsepower 1.0-liter three cylinder engine, mounted flat between the rear wheels, and powering them through an automated manual transmission with five speeds. The transmission is the least pleasant one we've driven, shifting abruptly and slamming the car back and forth as it decouples power and then clutches it back. It takes an experienced foot modulating the accelerator to keep the car civilized in cut-and-thrust urban traffic.

Interiors and Special Features:

The old adage of "Never judge a book by its cover" is appropriate for the 2014 Smart Fortwo. Though tiny on the outside, the Smart's interior is surprisingly roomy. The Fortwo's tall shape creates ample headroom and legroom for two passengers, while the floating design of its dash adds to the cabin's sense of spaciousness. The Smart's rear cargo area is quite a bit smaller than that of a subcompact, but is large enough to swallow a bag of golf clubs. For further cargo flexibility, the passenger seat folds flat to carry additional items.

Safety features:

Standard safety features on the 2014 Smart Fortwo include antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, hill-start assist and eight airbags including front, knee, side-impact and side curtain.

In crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Fortwo earned the top rating of "Good" in moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side impact and roof strength tests. Its seat/head restraint design was rated "Acceptable" (second best out of the four ratings) for whiplash protection in rear impacts.
