The 2014 Ram 2500 is a fine pickup truck that delivers a set of uber-powerful engines, a decent cabin and tons of special features. The only issue is that it does not stand out from the crowd at all, being far too similar to its competitors from Ford and GM, but that’s just the nature of the current pickup truck market in general.

When it comes to heavy-duty pickup trucks, the competition is as fierce as it can be, with many big-name companies vying for dominance in this segment, including Ford, GM and of course Ram. One of the methods these companies use to outdo each other is by increasing the torque and horsepower outputs of their trucks, which is why the new 2014 Ram 2500 is so ludicrously overpowered.

Last year, Ram has reward the 2500 with plenty of upgrades, so our expectation was that this year’s incarnation would be left alone. This is not the case, however, since the 2014 2500 comes with coil spring instead of last year’s leaf spring suspension, higher-strength body frame that can also be found in the 3500 model and previously non-existent back air suspension.

While on the outside, the new Ram 2500 looks like any other Ram out there, the inside is surprisingly comfortable. In fact, it’s one of the most comfortable cabins in the pickup truck market, offering plenty of soft-touch materials, well-done stitching, plush seats and metallic accents. When it comes to legroom, you get enough of that as well, but only as long as you don’t need a long cargo bed. So, you can accommodate four full-sized adults without a hitch. The Mega Cab is particularly spacious in this regard.

In terms of features, the Ram 2500 comes with a 8.4-inch touchscreen audio-navigation with easily locatable buttons, quick speed and impressive support for smartphones. There are also optional cargo-view and rearview back-up cameras. While the cargo-view footage is displayed in the centre screen, the rearview footage can only be found on a small screen in the rearview mirror, which is a bit inconvenient (but not catastrophic).

The most impressive part of this pickup truck is undoubtedly located under its hood. The base 5.7-litre V8 can produce up to 383 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, while paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. There also two optional engines, like a 6.4-litre V8 and a 6.7-litre turbocharged, diesel-fuel six-cylinder, called the Cummins. The 6.4-litre variant produces 420 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque, while being combined with a six-speed automatic. The Cummins offers 350 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque, if paired with a six-speed manual transmission. However, if it’s combined with a six-speed automatic, it can produce 370 horsepower and whopping 800 pound-feet of torque. None of these engines are particularly fuel efficient, but they are powerful, which is clearly what Ram was aiming for in the first place.

Overall, the 2014 Ram 2500 is the kind of pickup truck you should own if that’s what you’re looking for in the first place. However, if you happen to like any of the alternatives from either Ford or GM, don’t be shy to dismiss this one in favour of Ford Super Duty F-250 and GMC Sierra 2500HD.

Puissance et performance:

Standard on most versions of the 2014 Ram 2500 is a 5.7-liter V8 engine that produces 383 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. The 5.7 is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The 2500 is available with either rear-wheel drive or part-time four-wheel drive. Tradesman models feature a manually engaged transfer case for the 4WD system; an electronic transfer case is optional on the Tradesman and standard on all other Rams.

There are two optional engines for the 2500: a 6.4-liter V8 and a 6.7-liter turbocharged, diesel-fueled inline six-cylinder known as the Cummins. The gasoline 6.4-liter V8 produces 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque and is backed by a six-speed automatic. The Cummins turbodiesel engine produces 350 hp and 660 lb-ft of torque when matched with the available six-speed manual transmission, or 370 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque with a six-speed automatic.

In Edmunds testing, a 4WD Ram 2500 crew cab with the 6.4-liter V8 went from zero to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds. Equipped with the 6.7-liter turbodiesel, another 4WD crew cab accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 8.7 seconds.

Depending on body style and rear axle ratio, the Ram 2500 is rated to tow up to 13,860 pounds with the 5.7-liter V8, 16,300 pounds with the 6.4-liter V8, 16,870 for the manual-equipped diesel and 17,970 with the automatic and diesel engine (Ram stipulates that any trailer over 17,000 pounds requires a fifth-wheel hitch). Properly equipped, the maximum payload for trucks with the 5.7-liter is 3,030 pounds, 3,970 pounds for the 6.4-liter engine and 3,140 pounds for the diesel.

Caractéristiques spéciales et intérieures:

Features-wise, the base Regular-Cab Tradesman is likely to remain pretty bare bones, with 17-inch steel wheels, auxiliary transmission cooling and a trailer hitch and wiring outside, while vinyl upholstery, cruise control, tilt-wheel steering, air conditioning and a 6-speaker AM/FM stereo likely will remain adorning the cabin. Tradesman Crew and Mega Cab variants, meantime, should return sporting a split-folding rear seatback and full power accessories, including heated power-adjustable outside mirrors.

A manually sliding rear window, upgraded exterior trim, cloth upholstery, remote power door locks, some added decorative cabin bling, satellite radio and a USB connection should again grace the SLT, while the Crew-Cab-only Power Wagon ought to throw in 17-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires, skid plates and a power sliding rear window.

The 2014 Ram 2500 Laramie trim level, sold only in Crew and Mega Cab editions, should sport such extras as leather upholstery, heated power-adjustable front seats, a universal remote garage door opener, a rear-view camera, dual-zone climate control, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, heated steering wheel and memory for driver's settings. The expected Uconnect-interfaced audio system, meanwhile, should remain boasting 10 speakers and a memory-card slot, with Bluetooth hands-free calling once more thrown in for good measure.

Finally, the flagship Laramie Longhorn, again available in only Crew and Mega Cab garb, is likely to remain well-equipped with all the adornments of its Laramie sibling, plus step running boards, premium leather upholstery, rear parking sensors and standard hard-drive-based navigation.

Optional equipment like a trailer brake controller, single-CD player, auxiliary switches and a spray-in bedliner are again expected to be available to all trim levels, along with power-folding outside mirrors and a tri-fold tonneau cover. Additional available optional equipment like upgraded Uconnect 8.4A with an 8.4-inch touchscreen display, remote engine start, a power sunroof and tubular side steps should return as well, and will doubtless depend on the trim level selected for availability.

Caractéristiques de sécurité:

The 2014 RAM 2500 comes with 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and four airbags (front and full-length side curtain). It also boasts optional safety features such as parking assist and a rearview camera.

While heavy-duty trucks aren't crash-tested, you'll be on the safer side of most collisions.
