Quick Look

The 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is certainly not the best in the compact sedan market, but at least it’s trying to excel at something. The 2.0-litre engine under its hood can yield the impressive 291 horsepower, making it one of the more powerful sedans in this segment. However, with poor fuel economy and absolutely horrendous interior design, this car is unlikely to appeal to many prospective buyers out there.

Full Review

The 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution delivers excellent performance, but its design is questionable at best. It’s a compact car from a bygone era, back when performance was more important than the look. As such, its rivals, like the Subaru Impreza and even Honda Civic have a much greater focus on modern visual cues and finer details. But before you think that the Evolution’s lack of sex appeal is a charming attribute, let us point out that the car also lack in fuel economy and has poor sound isolation, making it incredibly outdated.

On the outside, things aren’t so bad though – visually speaking. The sedan offers angular, sporty design, while being accompanied by an aggressive nose and advancing posture. Unlike the other Lancers this year, the Evolution takes the level of aggressiveness to a much higher level, featuring vented and flared fenders, two hefty exhaust pipes and ginormous back spoiler (on the GSR models). It’s also shorter and lower than the other variants in the lineup, offering a longer wheelbase and width to improve handling, which sort of makes it sportier than the other models as well. Overall, the look isn’t mind-blowing, but it is serviceable (if not a bit generic).

On the inside, however, things get really dicey. Everything is bland and outdated, with cheap plastics covering just about everything. It also lacks a telescoping steering wheel – on all models and trims, which makes it tough to find the right fit. The Recaro seats at the front are properly bolstered and low-sitting, but they lack height adjustments, so shorter drivers might find it tough to see the road beyond the dashboard. The cargo area and back room are serviceable, but they’re not nearly big enough to support four adults comfortably. If you’re in the process of examining Lancers, we suggest taking a look at the Sportback model, which features 52.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the back seats folded flat.

When it comes to powertrains, the 2014 Lancer comes with four of them. The Evolution, however, offering only one – a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder, which can produce 291 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. It’s not the best engine by today’s standards due to a turbo lag and the need to be revved high to use it to its full potential, but it’s the most powerful one in the entire Lancer lineup. Whether that’s a good or bad thing is up to you. The worst part about this car is absolutely terrible fuel economy that’s far below the standards of every other competitor out there.

Overall, the 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution isn’t an absolute disaster, but with so many outdate attributes, it’s definitely not a worthy purchase. If you’re attracted by its exterior design, check it our – otherwise, steer clear! You’ve been warned.

Power and Performance:

The Evolution is of course the performance star of the lineup. It packs a 291-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that's very peaky by today's standards, with quite a bit of turbo lag and the need to be revved high into its range to extract its power. When it arrives, it's phenomenal, and delivered confidently with an Active Center Differential, helical-gear front differential, and Active Yaw Control, altogether giving this plebeian sedan the agility, tractability, and poise to match much more expensive sport machines. You can get a notchy five-speed manual gearbox, but our pick would actually be the six-speed 'Twin Clutch SST' gearbox--a dual-clutch automatic that actually serves to help keep you in the turbo boost. If drivability is important, though, you might prefer the Ralliart for its better drivability and broader torque curve.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer's sharp and modern exterior styling does not extend into its cabin. Here, the Lancer is showing its age, and bland, cheap plastic doesn't help. The lack of a telescoping steering wheel on all models makes it harder to find a perfect fit. Evo editions have well-bolstered, low-sitting Recaro seats up front, but without height adjustment, shorter drivers will struggle to see over the dash. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob make GT and Ralliart trims more appealing. The most versatile Lancer of the bunch is the Sportback, which delivers 52.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded.

Safety features:

Standard safety features for the 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution include antilock brakes, front seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, a driver knee airbag, stability and traction control and a variety of advanced handling technologies. Rear parking sensors are optional.

In Edmunds brake testing, the Lancer Evolution came to a stop from 60 mph in a short 113 feet. In government crash testing, the regular Lancer, on which the Evolution is based, received four out of five stars for overall crashworthiness, along with four stars for frontal- and side-impact safety. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Lancer its top score of "Good" in moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof-strength crash tests.
