The 2014 Dodge Durango is not your typical rugged SUV, but it does deliver in all the areas that count – and it does so in spades. Its cabin is both spacious and luxurious, while its exterior is nothing short of spectacular. Under the hood, it carries a phenomenally powerful (yet admittedly fuel-hungry) 5.7-litre V8, which provides juice to satisfy the even most aggressive drivers out there.

The 2014 Dodge Durango isn’t really crossover, leaning more in the direction of an SUV, but it’s not the most suitable car for off-roading, if that’s what you’re looking for. Thanks to a comfortable cabin, two fantastic engines and tons of special features. The 2014 Durango is only lacking in the area of fuel economy, but in all the other aspects, it’s a fantastic vehicle that’s well worth your money.

With a front fascia that comes with a set fine set of LED eyeliners under the car’s projector-beam headlights, the new Dodge Durango looks much more aesthetically reinvigorated than the last year’s model. The crossover also comes with three choices for a cross-hair grille, all of which are slimmer than the ones in the older models, giving this instance a sense of elegance. To complement this sense of elegance, the Durango comes with a new LED range that extends across the back end twice over. In terms of features, you’ll find seven new wheel designs that range from 18 to 20 inches, along with nine colours. Since 1998, this has been one of the most recognizable and good-looking SUVs on the market, so if a decent look is one of your main concerns, then you should be satisfied with this one.

On the inside things get even better, as the Durango displays a sense of fine craftsmanship and luxury with pride. The biggest emphasis of the interior is on comfort thanks to premium materials, mind-blowing sound isolation and the same aesthetic elegance as on the outside. The Limited and Citadel trims offer special features like heated and ventilated front seats, along with heated second row. Leather comes as a standard, which is something we always welcome.

But let’s not forget about the amount of space you can have in this car. Both the first- and second-row seats offer more headroom and legroom than most of us need. But while those things are expected in an SUV, what’s surprising is that even the third row would make you comfortable – even if you happen to be a tall adult. The cargo area is nothing to sneeze at either, offering plenty of room for transporting large-sized objects and maybe even people (but we advise against that).

However, what is a car with a decent engine under its hood? Well, in the case of SUVs, such a car is not much of anything, really. Luckily, the Dodge Durango comes with two powerful engines – a 3.6-litre V6, which can generate 290 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and 5.7-litre V8, which can give you 360 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. Both engines will give you more than enough power to satisfy your most primal urges. That said, expect to pay a price for it since the car’s fuel economy isn’t stellar – not even close.

Overall, the 2014 Dodge Durango is exactly the kind of car it appears to be: spacious, good-looking and powerful. At the end of the day, those features are exactly what the majority of us look for in our ideal car in the first place.

Puissance et performance:

For the 2014 model year, the Dodge Durango stands by its choices of V-6 or V-8 power, both in good form. New to the mix is an eight-speed automatic transmission that pairs with either engine for better gas mileage and in some cases, a little bit of sporty flair in the form of shift paddles.

For those who need the passenger space but don't need to tow thousands of pounds regularly--most of us--the 3.6-liter V-6 is the better choice. With 290 horsepower (295 in the R/T) and 260 pound-feet of torque, it's quick enough and strong enough, and it's no longer boomy at midrange speeds as we've observed in the past. Now coupled to the eight-speed automatic--with a rotary shift control, a nice touch--the Durango six-cylinder gets up to 20 mpg combined, too--not great by any means, but a solid improvement.

That new transmission even comes with shift paddles in some versions, but the programming could use some work. Instead of the 30-second cycle into manual mode that's common on many paddle-shifted non-sports cars, the Durango persists in manual mode until you hold a paddle forward for three seconds--kludgy, in UI-speak, for drivers but better for towing.

Drivers who tow or regularly carry a full load of cargo and people should opt for the strong, snarly HEMI 5.7-liter V-8. It's terrific for stoplight launches and interstate cruising. But despite the presence of the same automatic, it's still pretty thirsty; if you're not in love with the sound of the engine or don't really need it for towing (rated at up to 7,400 pounds), you're going to feel the sting of fuel bills more often, since gas mileage can be as low as 14 mpg city.

With either the V-6 or the V-8, the Durango can be fitted with all-wheel drive; V-8s have real heavier-duty capability--i.e., a low range--to enable that big tow figure.

Caractéristiques spéciales et intérieures:

The interior of the 2014 Durango reflects luxury-car quality and craftsmanship, an update that emphasizes comfort, premium materials, visual elegance and supreme quiet. Limited and Citadel trims offer such features as heated and ventilated front seats, heated 2nd-row seating and standard leather seating. The Durango's 28 possible configurations allow for any combination of people and cargo, from the roomy spot behind the 2nd-row seat to the full-length flat cargo floor created by the flush-folding front passenger seat. A purposeful black color scheme, highlighted by bright trim elements, distinguishes the sporty R/T, and in Durangos equipped with 2nd-row captain's chairs a new pass-through feature eases 3rd-row access.

Caractéristiques de sécurité:

Antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, trailer sway control, front side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags are standard on every 2014 Dodge Durango. A rearview camera and parking sensors are optional on the SXT and standard on all other Durangos.

Models with Uconnect Access (included with the 8.4-inch touchscreen) have an emergency telematics system that connects you with 911 operators at the touch of a button and provides stolen vehicle tracking. Optional on the Limited, Citadel and R/T is a blind-spot monitoring system with cross-traffic alerts. Note that the available Technology Group available on R/T and Citadel models now includes a more advanced forward collision warning and mitigation system that automatically applies the brakes in potential collision situations.

In government tests, the Durango received five out of five stars for side-impact protection. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests, the Durango earned a "Good" rating for its performance in moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof strength crash tests.
