The 2014 Dodge Challenger offers the same old-school appearance as its aged predecessors, but it pulls it off in the manner that allows it to stay attractive. The biggest perk of this muscle car is undoubtedly its powerful 6.4-litre Hemi V8 engine, which can pump out the whopping 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.



Out of the three classic muscle cars, the 2014 Dodge Challenger resembles its old-school self the most. In other words, it has stuck to the design choices that have made it famous in the first place, which for the most part is a good thing. Why? Because in spite of looking “old,” this car is far more powerful and stouter than its decade-old counterparts. That said, whether it’s a notch above its muscle buddies like Chevy Camaro and Ford Mustang will depend entirely on your preferences.

2014 Challenger’s exterior has the same long nose, flat sheetmetal, horizontal grille and wide taillights that you’d find on the older models. It also has small windows and a tall behind, which combined with everything else give off a very macho vibe. Depending on your taste, this design can be seen as a great strength or weakness. While the Camaro and Mustang have gone for leaner and less aggressive stance, the Challenger hasn’t changed one bit. If you like the classics, then you’ll love this look. And with the SRT8 models, you get more macho details, working brake ducts, deeper air dams and stuff like striping packages and a Ram air hood. As if that’s not enough, you also get xenon headlights, special badging and fiber trim.

Despite its awesomely muscly exterior, the Dodge Challenger is a bit lacking on the inside. The layout of the controls, switches and buttons is a tad boring due to being a little too minimalistic. The materials aren’t exactly top-notch either, involving hard plastics, bland colours and textures, barely acceptable details and not much else. That said, we really liked the seats in these cars, which are both firm and wide, while being highly adjustable. What is surprising is that two adults can actually fit in the back – as long as they can get there that is, since the rear doorway isn't exactly accommodating. Even the trunk is unexpectedly large, being about 16 cubic feet, which is more than what you’d find in an average-sized sedan.

But the true muscle car doesn’t rely on its looks to get by, but on whatever is stashed under its hood, which should in theory be a decent engine, and the 2014 Challenger comes with three of them. The base 3.6-litre V6 comes can produce 305 horsepower and 268 pound-feet of torque, being designed for big, open roads or curvy hills. Next up is the 5.7-litre Hemi V8, which will give you 372 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque when combined with the automatic transmission. It will produce even more with the manual one, offering 375 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. The most impressive engine, however, is the 6.4-litre Hemi V8, which will give you 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The latter engine is clearly not meant for people in search of good fuel economy. But then again, if efficiency is your primary goal, then the Challenger is not your car.

Overall, the 2014 Dodge Challenger is the sort of car that only car enthusiasts should consider. If you already own a family or commute car and you have a few extra bucks to spend on something fun, then this muscle car will do just fine. Otherwise, look in another direction.

All 2014 Dodge Challengers are rear-wheel drive. The base SXT is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 that produces 305 hp and 268 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed automatic is standard. EPA fuel economy estimates stand at 18 mpg city/27 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined.

The Challenger R/T gets a 5.7-liter V8 and a standard six-speed manual transmission that harnesses 376 hp and 410 lb-ft. When hooked up to the available five-speed automatic, the "Hemi" V8's output drops slightly to 372 hp and 400 lb-ft. In Edmunds testing, a manual-equipped Challenger R/T went from zero to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds; the automatic raises that to 5.8 seconds. Quick as they are, both times are still a bit slower than what you can expect from a V8-powered Camaro or Mustang. Fuel economy is 16/25/19 for the automatic, with the manual getting 15/23/18.

The Challenger SRT8 models get their swagger from a 6.4-liter V8 that produces 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual is standard and a five-speed automatic is optional. In Edmunds testing, a manual-equipped SRT8 392 went from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, which is impressively quick but still a bit off the pace of a similarly powered Camaro or Mustang. Fuel economy estimates are 14/23/17 for either transmission.

If the 2014 Dodge Challenger is a terrific representation of muscle-car glory on the outside, it's sort of merely adequate inside. The layout seems uninspired. There are hard plastics, so-so color choices, only-average textures, moderately-adequate details, a lot of ho-hum. But the seats are wide and firm, with sufficient side bolsters and adjustable lumbar support. Two adults can actually fit in the rear, although getting there requires a bit of gymnastics. The Challenger also provides, surprisingly, a fairly generous trunk.

The Challenger hasn't been tested in recent years by the agencies that assess crash-related incidents with new cars. However, the vehicle hasn't evolved much since it debuted, so many of the older ratings still stand, and the Challenger's long list of safety tech helps it score well with us.

The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) tested the Challenger and gave it an excellent five-star crash-test rating, with five-star results for all tests except four stars for rollover resistance. However, the NHTSA notes, "During the side impact test, the driver door unlatched and opened. A door opening during a side impact crash increases the likelihood of occupant ejection."

The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) has not tested the Challenger, but the structurally-related Dodge Charger has fared well according to the agency. 

Outward visibility is one significant concern, given the Challenger's high shoulders, thin wide windows, thick rear pillars, and rather low seating position. One concern for buyers of the 2014 Challenger may be visibility. It can be hard to see blind spots when changing lanes, as well as the rear of the car when backing up, or even the front of the hood when parking.

Items included on all Challengers include electronic stability control; front, side, and side-curtain airbags; and anti-lock brakes. Top-end SRT8 models also get some performance/safety enhancements, with Brembo brakes and Hill Start Assist. A driver's knee bag is also included, and a rearview camera system and blind-spot monitors are available.
