The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado is a practical, spacious and efficient pickup truck that comes with an all-new design and a set of three very powerful engines. Its safety features are nothing to sneeze at either since this is one of the safest vehicles in its class.

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is here to make heavy lifting and hauling just a touch easier than usual, thanks to weight-reducing redesign and a set of powerful yet fuel-efficient engines. Since pickup trucks exist primarily for the purpose of transporting heavy items – usually on the daily basis – they tend to attract a very specific group of individuals. As such, if you’re not a manual labourer, contractor or just someone in need of a truck, then don’t even look at this car. The rest of you – feel free to read on since this car is one the best in its class.

The first thing that will “jump” at you is the fact that it doesn’t look all that special or revolutionary, but it’s very likeable nevertheless. The redesign has mainly improved on the pickup’s front, which has received far too many complaints in the past. It wisely takes cues from the latest Silverado 2500 and 3500 HD, incorporating their wall-of-chrome grille, abrupt noses and a taller stance to create an almost big-rig type of appearance. The 2014 Silverado also features well-honed details on the sheetmetal and a dual-dome hood, both of which help this truck to stand above the competition such as the Ford F-150, Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra.

On the inside, the Silverado looks as “truck-like” as you can imagine, avoiding the lower and more carlike appearance. The cabin features an all-new instrument panel, which now stands upright and has been made easier to navigate – since the controls are now located either on the left side of the steering wheel or on the large centre console. All the buttons, knobs and interface are very simple to read and use, even if you’re wearing gloves. You’ll also find the MyLink system here, which has an eight-inch touchscreen with a very useful voice command interface and easy-to-use menus.

Since this is a pickup truck, the main attraction should undoubtedly be its cargo bed. Those of you who are looking to choose between different lengths will be happy to know that the new Silverado 1500 offers three choices: 5’8”, 6’6” and 8’. From the moment you first see it, it’s clear that GM has put a lot of effort in the design of the car’s pickup box. It features a CornerStep bumper and hand-grip pockets, with the tailgate being rotary damped and LED lights sitting under the bed rails.

Yet as good as a cargo bed can be, no pickup truck deserves to be called half-decent without a good engine onboard. Fortunately, the new Chevy Silverado offers a choice of three excellent engines: a 4.3-litre V-6, 5.3-litre V-8 and 6.2-litre V-8. The V-6 engine can produce up to 285 horsepower and 605 pound-feet of torque, while the 5.3-litre V-8 can reach 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. The real winner is of course the 6.2-litre V8, which can generate 420 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque and can tow almost 12,000 pounds. So, if you need as much power as possible, then the latter engine is definitely the way to go. However, all three of them are very good, featuring direct injection, continuously variable valve timing, cylinder deactivation and a six-speed automatic transmission. These engines have it all.

So, if you need a reliable truck that has plenty of space in the back and a phenomenal engine, then you should definitely give the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 a try. We’re having a hard time finding any real flaws with it, and that’s definitely a good thing.

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a pickup truck that effortlessly sticks to tradition, while getting rid of what hasn’t work and keeping what has. This year, Chevrolet gave the car a much more modern and aerodynamic look, but retained the square face that the Silverados are known for.

In fact, the pickup is much taller and far more aggressive at the front than it’s ever been, taking after GM’s 2500 and 3500 HD trucks to look more like a “big rig.” The grille now has a mesh-honeycomb look to it, which gives the face a sense of ruggedness, while the dual-dome hood, slick sheetmetal details and angular wheel wells elevate its shoulders and square off the car’s overall profile.

When it comes to aerodynamics, they’re mostly possible thanks to the Silverado 1500’s sealed grille design, which invites only as much air as needed, and not much more. The hood design helps the car’s aerodynamics too – by letting air flow over the wipers.

The pickup is available in many different body styles, such as regular cab, extended “Double” cab and crew cab. Regular cabs offer either a 6.5-foot standard bed or an 8-foot bed, while extended cabs provide a 6.5-foot extended bed. Crew cabs come with a 5.75-foot short bed and 6.5-foot standard bed. Most notable external features include twin-stacked projector-beam headlamps, 17-, 20- and 22-inch wheels and flared fenders.

All these features and more add up to a macho look that fits perfectly with what you’d expect this truck to do.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offers a choice of three engines, two of which are V-8s and one that is a V-6. These are same engine families as last year, but they’re not the same engines since they are powered by EcoTec3 technology.

The 4.3-litre V-6 is basically just as good as any V-8 – but with two cylinders missing. It produces 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque, which makes it perfect for crew-cab variants or towing. So, if you’re looking to tow a small boat or a set of ATVs or snowmobiles, then this engine will do just fine – it can tow up to and above 4,700 pounds.

But, if you want to tow something approaching the weight of 11,500 pounds, then you’ll need something a little more powerful – like the 5.3-litre V-8. This engine can generate 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. It’s quick and self-assured – even when carrying a hefty load.

Finally, the 6.2-litre V-8 offers even more power than that, being able to pump out 420 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. This hunk of metal can tow up to 12,000 pounds when needed, so it’s definitely the best choice if extensive towing is something you’re planning to do.

In terms of fuel economy, the 2014 Silverado is doing much better than its predecessors, but if you’re looking for an ultra-fuel-efficient car, then look elsewhere because this isn’t it. The V-8 variants come with EPA ratings of 14.7 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 10.2 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway with rear-wheel drive. With four-wheel drive, these numbers go up to 14.7L/100km city and 10.7L/100km highway. The EPA ratings for the V-6 engine are 13.1L/100km city and 9.8L/100km highway with rear-wheel drive. With four-wheel drive, the ratings increase to 13.8L/100km city and 10.7L/100km highway.

Yes, these engines are not too fuel-efficient, but they are very powerful – which is all that should matter in the end, if a pickup is what you’re looking for.

Interiors and Special Features:

Pickup trucks are not always able to distinguish themselves through their interior design, yet the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 still manages to stand above its competition. The cabin is tall and simple – which is exactly what you’d expect from a truck – featuring improved quality materials and build. You will also find plenty of bins and cubbies, which are scattered throughout the cabin. Higher trims get up to five USB ports as well as the MyLink system, which comes with an eight-inch touchscreen, simple menus and a voice command interface.

Not surprisingly, the seating is actually very comfortable and spacious – it was designed for people who would be spending a lot of time in their trucks. As such, you’ll find thickly padded seats with ample headroom and legroom, both in the back and at the front. In fact, the back seating now has a bit more legroom than before, while the front passengers get extra fore/aft seat adjustability. In other words, everyone wins – which is rarely the case when it comes to seat arrangements.

Safety features:

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 performs impressively well in the department of safety features, which is always a good thing when it comes to pickup trucks. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has awarded it with a five-star rating overall, which makes it the safest full-size pickup truck currently available. Meanwhile, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has given it “good” ratings in almost all categories, though it’s yet to receive a rating in the small overlap frontal test.

The standard safety features include anti-lock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front and back-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags. There’s the OnStar system as well, which provides services like automatic crash notification, roadside assistance, remote door unlocking and stolen vehicle assistance. Some of the optional features are a rearview camera, front and rear park assist as well as lane departure warning and forward collision alert. So, if you’re in search of a safe pickup truck, this is as good as it gets.
